Big 'pop' or 'bang' noise on the way home tonight

Hi guys,

Just picked up an 03 996tt with now 32k miles on it, supposed to be stage II - not entirely sure what that entails, but the car is clean & had good service history. The first thousand miles have been a little more expensive than I had anticipated (~3300 at the local dealer), and I think it just got a bit uncomfortable.

Coming home tonight, when merging rolled into 3rd gear around 2500rpm, hit 1.0 bar of boost (normal) and then BOOM, sounded like I hit a rock with the underbody of the car. let out immediately, but could imagine a bit of a sputter. Got about 1 mile down the road to a red light, and as I slowed the sputter turned real. Pulled onto the shoulder and the car died under a wild idle.

The car drives "OK" when the revs are up, but once they get under 2000 things get a bit hairy. Drove another 3 miles home very very gently, and noticed that the car was making .1 bar when it had no real business doing so.

What the hell just happened?? Did I blow an intercooler pipe?

Haven't posted one yet, so here is a picture I took earlier tonight. Looked better on the phone, but oh well haha. Wheel spacers are in the mail...

likely a blown pipe under boost. .1 bar indicates limp mode. I'll let the pros chime in. good luck.

Hopefully it's as simple as an intercooler hose pop off.

+1. Sounds like a common problem especially on cars producing extra boost.

That's reassuring, thanks for the quick responses. Got hit by a wave of buyer's remorse... wife wasn't a big fan either!

I think I may have found the/an issue.

Will reattach once the motor cools and hope that solves the issue and follow up tomorrow. Always welcome to any insight anybody might be able to share in the mean time

Kinda a weird pipe to pop off?
vacuum line?

closer look

If a intercooler hose popped of you should be getting a PSM ABS and a CEL light.

Have you pulled any codes?

yup definitely broken and will not reattach. it can cause driveability issues and idle issues for sure just like any large vac leak.
