Honestly, I would try chipping the stock turbos and buying a good exhaust/intake setup. Many hefty gains have been made with the stock K16 turbos.

However, there is a Stage II turbo setup with the Upsolute chip that makes some serious hp (perhaps a bit more) for less than you would spend on the K24 turbos for, much less for 2 K-24 turbos and a chip.

Read about it here:

Ditto... my '01 K16 with just the chip put down 455rwhp and 505rwtq. Will you get more power out of the K24... not sure, I've run dead even with a few chipped K24's... not sure why.

In fact, while my current turbos have compressor wheels twice as big as K24's with no noticeable penalty in lag, I am definitely well into diminishing returns when compared to that first $500 chip!

I need to get off my butt and get a chip back in that badboy. Just waiting until this awful Texas heat dies down. My S4 feels like a dog in this weather, but the Turbo seems to handle the heat a bit better. Maybe the S4 just feels like a dog because I've been driving the X50 too much

If you are going to upgrade the turbos, there are MUCH better options than OEM K24s. Speed Gallery offers a K16/K24 hybrid that spools like a K16, but generates power like a K24. I went from X50 K24s to SG's hybrids and they were infinitely better. SG offers several different programs for these turbos. Which ever turbo you change to, matched programming is essential.

I have used many different turbos on my 996 and I can tell you from experience that the OEM K24s are among the least impressive.

I need to speak with Rene again and go ahead and pull the trigger on the Upsolute. My only concern is the ABS/PSM light issue that is triggered by the MAF (this was confirmed to be the issue, yes?). Does he give any type of assurance on affecting the MAF and/or other side effects?

We'll definitely have to discuss my options. I would like to bounce a few questions off of you if you don't mind. Now that I am out of warranty, why not?

Feel free to PM me with any questions or ph number, Ruiner.

I had zero issues with the K16 program. Once I got stage II with the Kevin turbos (2x size of K24), the ABS/PSM issue comes into light during cold weather... since moving to Cali, it has NOT come up. I suspect the MAF limits may still need to be bumped up slightly for people living in cold-weather climates.

I can attest to that... I've been modding cars a long time, and experienced no noticable difference/degradation between the K16 and Kevin's hybrids (again, 2X size of K24 compressor wheel)... these babies spool aggresively and flow at the top end.

Kevin, can you explain the relative size/flows of the K16 vs K24 vs stage4 GT vs your stage2 compressor wheels?
