993TT's are worth more than 996TT's

What many 996TT owners suspected has finally happened.
In the online edition of Dupont, the average value of the 993TT has eclipsed and in some instances surpassed that of the first year 996TT. Despite the 993 being an earlier year/generation, its average resale value seems to be stabilizing at a higher point than that of the 996.

993 low:

'96/ $64850/ 31 400miles

high:

'96/ $89 995/ 5000miles

996 low:

'01/ $69 950/ ?????miles

high:

'01/ $89 999/ 36 000miles

Note that even though the polar end values of the spectrum still favours the 996, the range in between favours the 993, if one considers mileage and year of production.

So what gives? Is it the overproduction of the 996TT or is it that the 993 is aircooled, making it a classic? Probably two contributing factors but in my opinion it's simply the fact that the 993 is the most aesthetic turbo up to date. I really feel that the 993TT is the epitome of porsche design. In a way I think that the 996, no matter how handsome, really came before its time. It should really be the successor to the 997. Many porsche fans just weren't ready for the teardrop headlights etc.
On the upside, this might give current 996 owners an incentive to hang on to their TT's since the resale is so poor (me included). This might help stabilize 996 prices. On the other hand I can now forget about pickin up a 993TT cheap.

I can honestly say that if a 993TT worth more than my 996TT is offered for an even trade, I still wouldn't take it.

Classic or not, I like the 996TT better.

Now if it's $20k more, then maybe I'd take it, sell it, keep the change and buy another 996TT.

The prices are irrelevant to me as an owner now coz I don't have any plans in selling the car.

I agree! I didn't buy mine with the idea of selling it. Actually got rid of my 911SC and 930 for the 996TT...my dream car! Maybe my insurance will go down?

It won't be long before Carrera GTs are worth less than 959s. Porsche doesn't make cars like they used to and the market is a reflection of this sentiment. With that said, at the end of the day it's still a Porsche, you're driving fine machinery regardless of the iteration....well, except for maybe the 924 or 912

Congratulations on keeping your TT's. Most likely I will do the same for the time being. However, like most of us here at 6 speed, I like to flip or switch out rides every so often. If the resale value tanks like it did for our TT's, then one tends to get a bit annoyed.
On a side note, comparing others cars in the garage like the cl 500 and LX470, they retained their value about 10 to 20% (of sticker) better than the TT. And thats mercedes and lexus which I consider not having the same status as porsche. The only car that fared as bad as the TT is a Denali XL but it being a GM I'm not really surprised.

right...this is so they spend less time in the shop and more time on the road. Today's car are far superior and far better designed than any previous model. "They sure don't make 'em like they use to..." sounds like my grandfather...give me a break.

I don't think its nearly as bad as everyone says. Manheim Auction sales shows my 01 as having lost $5k in the past year (on average). Thats pretty normal. and Prjections for Aug 06 show only a $3k loss from today. I can live with that. 03's are still selling wholesale at slighly over $90k w/ 10k miles w/ a retail of $97k, and are projected to only go to $91k in the next year (retail). Also a pretty normal drop, percentage wise. Sure, I'd rather have mine still be worth upper $90's, but I never thought it would stay there to begin with.

As much as I love 993's , if given the choice to purchase a 97 TT for $70 and an 02 TT for $75....I would have to go with the 996. As stated before 5 years worth of technological advancements do make a difference.

I am going to get a 993 TT. If I had to make a choice, I'd stick with the 996 TT - it's an elegant solution. IMHO, the 996 is more of a GT car where the 993 is more of a racer.

I've owned both cars. In fact, I gave up my 993TT only 3 months after buying it for my 996TT. The 993 is a nice car but for me personally, the 996 is just better overall. It just seems to do everything better. Especially after the upgrades. I have an older 930 that I was driving recently for a couple of hours and then immediately jumped into the 996. What a difference. The 996 was just so much more bad ***. I never saw that with the 993. It just seemed like my 930 except that it was newer.
Whats huge for me is that I live in an area thats pretty hot in the summer and I dont have to keep my eye on the temp guage all the time. And the A/C works great.

I don't need to think about it, it's happening right in front of me. If the 996TT were such a good successor to the 993 don't you think the values would be reflective of that sort of sentiment?

The bottom line (and this is well-documented fact in a number of publications) is that their profit margins went through the roof with the water-cooled 911 and Boxster and the average # of problems per car also went up quite a bit too. All this leads to a car that, to the market, isn't as desirable as the older models, not to mention the overproduction of nearly every model in the current lineup for N.America.

Look, the 996TT is a good car, and I'm not here to flame or argue, but the original poster wanted to know "What gives?" and that's what I was answering.

Maybe its due to overproduction, more 01 996TTs were built than 96 and 97 993TTs combined and the 996 TT was built through 05, what a joke.
