GT2 Slave Conversion Opinion
#31
I have been driving with the conversion now for ~3 months. I am experiencing a very stiff clutch pedal - very hard to depress and annoying in traffic. Is there any solution to soften it up a bit. What assist spring are you guys using?

IMHO (and I am sure I will get some flak for this) this has to be one of the most useless modifications that people do to their 996TTs. My accumulator and slave cylinder went south and I looked into the GT2 conversion at my race shop and they laughed. I track my car occasionally and drive it a bit (has 38k miles now on my 2001) and while the clutch has no feel and is light I have never stalled it and just adapted. I guess to each their own but to invest this much time and money into something that imparts a feel that is stiffer and just as annoying on the opposite end of the spectrum is silly. Again, bring on the flak!

you might have similar problem that I have with my first conversion

A couple months ago I noticed that my clutch suddenly developed a strange"stepped" feel to it...it would push in freely till about 1/2 way then(around the time the clutch likely disengaged) become stiffer and felt like itwas grinding on something all the way to the floor. Same thing in the other direction, from the floor up it was rough feeling, then about 1/2 way up, it would free up. Stranger still, it only did this when the engine was running.
Based on this, the shop thought it must have been the accumulator (the clutch was stiff 1st thing in the morning and had a vague, varying pick up point etc so in fairness that probably was going bad anyway) so we decided to scrap the whole system and do the GT2 conversion.
Picked the car up and now I have a much stiffer version of the same problem. Feels like its grinding/rubbing from the floor till about 1/2 way up. Gets worse the more I use the clutch in a day. I do have a LWFW and HD Clutch so maybe that's a factor.
Sorry to sidetrack the discussion but I thought maybe someone on this thread might have some ideas as to what is causing all of this. I was hoping to enjoy this "mod" but unfortunately, I'm not benefiting from it at all.
Any thoughts?

Here's some flak :-)
I totally disagree with this, but everybody has their own preferences. I have owned several 911's over many generations and many years and never disliked a clutch in any of them until I drove my 996TT home from the dealer. I noticed it on the first drive - it was vague and lacked feel. After driving the car for a couple of years, I was talking to a tech friend of mine who suggested converting to the GT2 non-assisted clutch. We made a plan to do it and I have enjoyed the car so much more ever since. This was many years ago and was the first known conversion of a turbo to a GT2 clutch on these forums. I mentioned it at the time and it took a while until someone else felt the same way and tried it and preferred it. Then others began to follow suit and then EVOMS introduced their kit, which made it a lot more popular.
IMO, the shop that laughed at the idea of it has no idea what they are talking about and have their head in the sand. Why would the 996 GT2, a flagship turbo model come with this style clutch if it were a joke. It's no joke that it's lighter in weight and performs better.

Mines converted too. Coming from a BMW m3 e92 (worlds worst clutch / shifter linkage /2nd gear) it's perfect. Heavy? Yes. But I know the engagement point and its doesn't feel numb at all. Combined with a stage 3 disk finally a transmission system that fits with a high performance car.
If yours doesn't feel right either it's not your preference or the person who did the work screwed something up.

I'm gonna do the conversion after I take a breather. I got the ERP triple
disk and the 997 gt2 gears and a really crappy factory clutch

randy i have a spring for the clutch assist for you. remove the oem spring install this one and you will be fine. the gt2 wont perform any better and the petosin is just a poor lifespan design. the spring change will give you a better clutch feel and if the slave fails just replace it. you have what you need in the erp clutch. no worries
all this talk about a heavy clutch on this car makes me giggle. try a clutch on a 1000 ft /lb torque tractor trailer rig and you will see just how silly this is. rush hour traffic in my peterbuilt makes my knee shake from holding the clutch in. i can do the porsche clutch with my hand and not break a sweat.

no because the oem setup uses the petosin from the power steering unit and the gt2 doesnt. it has its own resovoir with dot 4 fluid

We are most likely headed to see Arthur on Friday. Can you make it?
You're gonna have to drive this car Steve.

My engagement point is always dead center, never changes.
GT2 conversion is more than just pedal feel, zero complaints.
