Porsche 911 turbo 996 coolant leak - engine out!!!?
Hi Guys,
This is my first post so please be nice
I invested in a 911 996 turbo last year and to date its been a dream, she has full porsche service history and in good shape! unfortunately last weekend trouble struck!
I was driving along, heard a slight clunk and there was coolant / steam everywhere. So I swiftly turned her off and thankfully the engine etc is all ok, its just a leak on the coolant system. When I tried to top it back up it literally poors out the car even when switched off and cold. I cannot see it leaking out anywhere but can hear it from the top of the engine, also when I get down on the floor its dripping from all around the engine (coming off all sides) so I can only assume the leak is on the top somewhere.
Now the bad news.....ive been told the engine needs to come out to carry out this repair, its certainly not visible but would this be the case? Apparently its the part where is directly connects on top of the engine and is a plastic part which comes as a complete unit and needs replacing. This part is £400 odd plus the engine removal im in for a big bill.
I scoured the internet high and low looking for other peoples experiences but I cannot find anything other than small coolant leaks, and the usual split bottles etc. Can any one offer any advice / help? Would the above be realistic in terms of parts and the engine needs to be dropped?
thanks in advance,
This is my first post so please be nice

You can replace that coolant expansion tank without removing the engine. There is a DIY on rennlist, let me see if I can dig it up.

Another common failure is the plastic coolant fittings that break, many replace them with welded fittings that won't do this in the future. This required an engine removal.

Welcome! Sorry to hear. If it is the coolant pipes and you are in the US, please report to feds:

I'm guessing if he's in the U.S. his shop wouldn't be quoting the repair as 400 pounds plus labor.

thanks guys, all very helpful. Interesting that they seem to address these things more in the US?
does any one know anything about the TSB 4897 the power steering reservoir, as mine also makes this high pitched whine noise. Ive read the actual TSB from Porsche but it doesnt appear to suggest they replace under warranty?
thanks for all your help and advice,

ahh, the old tsb 4897. i remember that one. yes, it's a valve that resonates inside the PS steering reservoir. i had one replaced under warranty in a previous turbo. i don't think any warranty exists for them still.. and i would only add, there is NO mechanical detriment to continuing to allow it to whistle. to get it to stop, engage the clutch.. or replace the ps pump res.

thanks guys....
just spoken to them again, and its the actual housing the cooant pipe goes into, then into the engine. So its the housing that has split/broken? anyone offer any advice on this as I certainly haven't read this on any of the previous posts.
I am a little inexperienced mechanically so a little unsure on whats what but that is what ive been told.
thanks again all,
cheers ed

Never heard of a broken housing before. It has to be the water pump housing or may be one of the three pipes that comes out of it...You should get your camera and take some pictures of the failed part!
