A rattle ... not good...

i don't know of one. again, it reminded me of a soundalike timing chain issue, from porsche's of the past. tensioners failed or some such. not sure about them in m96 engines. as i understand it, they do have a timing chain, but have not heard of them failing.

what, you never played "name that bad engine sound" on the internet before? get with it man! lol

Thanks Dragonman. Good to know, I keep my fingers (and wallet) crossed!

my biggest concern would be the sudden(?) onset of this condition. even on vid, it sounds.. well... not "normal" ims chatter did you a/b your vid with the other one?
#25
Seems NOT to increase with rev's . At least , listening to the video sound. that's what Ia m thinking..
#26
Now I am wondering it that could be clutch chatter instead. ie that should disappear when pressing the clutch then . Hm. will check and report later tonight
#28
could be right. i would defer to you and joe here who is capable of wheelies in his turbo. better a clutch than your ims disintegrating, i would think..and yeah.. i'm not sure i would drive it either.. take it in monday. gl w it!

My timing chain broke 2 years ago at 45000. Did not sound like that before it broke.
That sounds like IMS noise.
One thing I have noticed is that the IMS noise does not seam to correlate with failure.
I would have it looked but it is probably fine.
Using mobile 1 5w40 TDT or Delvac will make it quieter.
