A rattle ... not good...

OK so. I looked around some more. Sound / rattle does not disappear when I press the clutch but strangely enough, when I started the engine from cold tonight it did not make a noise, it was really smooth as always.
So I did notice over the last few months that once or twice, in the morning, with cold engine, the clutch was grabbing at a totally different point. I needed to release the clutch almost to the top of the travel before the clutch worked.. I specifically can feel it when I reverse out of the garage. So now I am hoping this is connected somehow. I have no leak, no pentosin sloshing around from what I can see but I did not look at that in detail.. I have an appointment with my indie on Monday. Ok boys.. show your knowledge.. and tell me what is wrong.. Damn, I will have to go and offer my services to the rich ladies again to pay for the Porsche habit!!!! That gets old very quickly..

Turbo internal engine issues are rare. Sure there is the exception but before you trash the car let the indy do his job.
Let the indy listen to the engine. He'll get the car in the air and he'll use a stethoscope and pinpoint the source of the noise and from this get a good feel for what's wrong.

The sound is totally normal. Eventually all 996tt/997tt develop this noise. It's the IMS gear and how well it meshes with the crank gear. The more backlash you have between the two gears, the more you will hear this sound. You will not hear it on cold start, only when the engine is warm. The sound should go away if you rev it above 2k rpms. Monitor you oil filter for metal, you have to cut it open and spread out the pleats. Look between the pleats.
The reason why you hear it at idle is because the engine firing pulses at idle speed up and slow down the crank quickly and that's where the backlash comes into play. There is a thread on 6speed where a guy tore apart his whole engine just because of that noise. He ended up finding nothing. Put in a new IMS gear with less backlash than the old one and it was much quieter.

you guys must all have better ears than i do. it sounded horrible to me... and the guy thinks it's gone from "normal" sounding,.. to crawling around under his car making iphone vids. i just hope my car ( 104k miles now ) never sounds like that.

With special complements of the Pentosin boys at Porsche in Germany, the system started a small leak. So a new vessel has been installed. They believe it was the sound of the pump that provides pressure to the Pentosin reservoir / system that made the unusual sound . I am picking up the car tonight and we will see if that took care of the problem. One more chalked up to good engineering! And yes, I know there is a GT2 replacement option to rip and replace the Pentosin system altogether. Next time Baby ... next time.. there will be a next time for sure!!
