A rattle ... not good...
My 2003 996TT with 27K miles on the clock just developed an engine rattle. It's very noticeable. I shot a little video but seem not to be able to get it downloaded. What is the quickest way??

27k miles? it's barely broken in! rattles? we don't need no stinkin' rattles. but an "engine rattle"? already sounds portentous. i would want to make sure my timing chain didn't "snap" has happened before, just not to me.. or often!

I do not think there is an IMS on a 996 TT

Yah, the 996tt is not prone to IMS engine failures. However, there was a recent thread on this forum re: engine rattle on the 996tt to poss IMS issues, rare and not as big a deal compared to non 996tts...
I'm sure one of the regulars on this forum who posted in said thread will chime in and offer his opinion.

do a try and use the stock headers, you will hear the noise not as loud as before....this sort of after market header amplifier the noise of the ims
check your oilfilter if its metal particles in it

Yep. Everything except if you are going to be the lucky one that is getting the booby price!! Some inherent engineering mistakes are haunting all of us. Yep ALL of us.

please man, don't say that i'd be panicked if my sh*t sounded like that. i listened to both vids, and hate to say it. yours actually sounded worse, but ims related. perhaps someone more knowledgeable will listen and report. again, nothin but empathy from me man..as it sounds nearly potentially catastrophic. to my ears anyway.
btw nice exhaust note ( over the rattle! yikes ). you mind? whatsit?

As far as the exhaust is concerned... it's just the standard OEM set up and frankly I also think that sounds the best.. I Tried a few others but they just did not have this effortless, half-*** polite sound at idle and *****ing at 4K revs and up... But I do have some souped up turbo's etc

wow. sounds great. didnt sound stock to me. the growl of tial, no doubt.
back to problem.. my first thought was timing chain.. but i ( like many in our government ) know nothing ( and this isn't my 993 lol ) has anyone had to replace the fancy vario whatzit timing chains and did their engines exhibit these noises before they failed? that could well be the $5000.00 question. ( parts & labor ugh )or again, could in fact be the ims going. either way, does not bode well.
ps.. i think your stock exhaust has been gutted a bit.. no?
