Clutch slave or accumulator?

Clutch slave or accumulator?
I'm trying to isolate which part to replace here, hoping if I share my symptoms someone can chime in and help me better diagnose this problem.
- Clutch/brake reservoir full and leaking - sucked some fluid out to bring it to normal level and continues to fill up and leak.
- Power Steering fluid was very low - topped off and seems to be stable for now.
- Recently started getting the high pitched whining after driving a decent distance. Pumping the clutch pedal a couple times stops the whining.
- Clutch pedal feels fine, no vibrations, slightly more difficult to push in when cold, feels normal once the car starts.
Based on the research I've done, it appears the problem could be the clutch slave or the accumulator, or both. Any insight into which one it is based on my above symptoms? Anything else I should test to isolate one from the other?
I'm ok replacing both, just don't want to replace perfectly functional parts if it's not needed - that's more $ to go to the fun stuff.
Thanks for the help in advance.

I recently had my front reservoir leaking I had my mechanic replace the accumulator and the leaking stopped he said that I wouldn't need to replace the clutch slave but said he would give me a 1500 mile warranty on the labor if the slave needed replacement. A few weeks later I noticed fluid leaking between the center of my rear tires it was the slave going out. So he replaced the slave and everything works as it should the last 1000 miles. All threads I have ever read recommend replacing both together cause once one goes out the other not far behind as I learned. Or you can go for the GT2 conversion. I can't comment on the high pitched whining you described as my car never made a noise as you describe. Good luck!

I just did the same repair and didn't chance it, I replaced both at the same time. A lot of guys do just the accumulator and run into the slave failing shortly afterwards as 602996TT has mentioned.
It's a ***** to change so you don't wanna do (or pay) the job twice.

+2. replace both. valve in the ps steering reservoir pump may have been completely empty.. that could well cause the whine.
the ps pump reservoir has a valve that resonates at hi temps. OR if devoid of pentosin ( broken ) you may have a combo of three issues at once. once you eliminate the accumulator and clutch slave. have the guy check out the ps pump reservoir also. remember fluid is being shared by all three components at some stage or another.
replacement stops the "whine" but so does engaging the clutch and nothing is harmed by the whine per se. though the latter method just stops the whine momentarily or until the right temp is again reached and that valve begins to "resonate" again.

If you have an upgraded clutch just do the GT2 conversion. Otherwise you will be doing this again next year. Ask me how I know. If you don't want to do the GT2 conversion replace both parts.

Any additional effort to depress the clutch pedal for a cold start is typically associated with accumulator failure. The accumulator is $130-150 IIRC, and again labor is a couple of hours.
It seems (non-empirical data) that both parts fail about that same time. I would strongly recommend both parts be replaced to save on labor costs.
Lots of people recommend the GT2 modification, although I have no personal experience with that system.

I just recently replaced both of the original ones, even though I just needed a slave, at around 40,000 miles..
I am glad I did because it feels better all the way around, plus one is an updated part from 997 turbo...
I do not have a GT2 conversion..
I am on my 3rd heavy duty clutch set-up.
Good Luck

You will shortly be on your third slave and accumulator before to long.

I have started with my first heavy duty Stage 3 CM put in at 15,000miles ,almost 25,000 miles ago and it those parts lasted to this recent 40,000miles....

And they apparently go out with STOCK clutch set -ups also..
I guess luck of the draw OR driving the vehicle the right way..
