Mass Air Flow Sensor Questions

I washed the car today and did my typical dry-off run and the car was on its way up the rev counter when all of a sudden it was as if the fuel was cut off at about 5K. It was WOT at that point. I didn't throw any codes and if I accelerate up to near redline, at slightly less than WOT it is fine. Kind of odd.

So, since it seems someone's MAF sensor goes bad each day here and locally as well, I am thinking I have a bad MAF sensor. I ruled out spark plugs since I just replaced them within the last 5,000 miles. I have a few MAF sensor questions and hope to get answers for each of them................
  1. Does this sound like a symptom of a bad MAF sensor?
  2. I have heard of people cleaning their MAF sensors, especially if they are running a oil charged air filter. I have also heard of various cleaning regimens and products used as well. Can you share what specific products and techniques to use to clean it?
  3. If it is bad, I have heard of people using the 2005 MAF sensor in its place. Why is this done and what are its benefits?

By the way, I have about 22K on the clock.

Ken - Good questions. I hope there are some answers out there. I've had some slight power issues once and awhile lately, and I don't think it's the plugs (only 4k on the new ones).

Yes. A failing MAF will cause the timing to be pulled as it runs more lean on the top end while WOT (closed loop). If the MAF is affected: This means Long Term Fuel Trims will learn lean (negative) corrections at idle and learn rich (positive) corrections at higher air flows. At idle, it runs rich. At higher air flows (WOT), it runs lean.

One guy in my thread suggested soaking it in a Simple Green (50 SG, 50 water) solution for 10 minutes. He then hit it with IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and then dried it (gently, not directly) with a hair dryer.

That I don't know. Perhaps Porsche realized a quality issue with '01 - '04 MAFs and beefed it up?

My car behaved exactly like yours when the MAF went bad. It would get a lean miss then cut out like it had a clogged fuel filter. If I got off the throttle quickly it wouldn't throw a code. If I kept my foot in it and it ran rough more than about 3 seconds it threw a misfire code p030x. If I drove it normally in traffic it ran perfectly. Long term fuel trim was +17% or something like that. The dealer put on a new MAF and fuel filter and it ran good. I think the MAF was the problem rather than the filter.

My TT also act like KPV car. Now the check engine, PSM and ABS lights were on. I just have EVO V-flow installed about 2 weeks ago. My car will go back to dealer for new MAF sensor. Will 05 bosxter MAF sensor really fix the problem?

Anyone experience throttle body closure at WOT? It feels like if you didn't have the seatbelt on you'ld be through the windshield.

Dock,
Great to hear from you! I hope all is well down there! Are you 7up for a "round two" on the Tail? I hope there are some answers as well, particularly about the cleaning and the use of the boxster MAF sensor.

ebaker,
That seems to be where I am at this point. I take my foot out of it when this happens. I am not familiar with the software upgrade required. If so, how does it work with flashed ECU's?

Brandon,
Have you tried cleaning yours? Is that the technique you used?

Ray,
That is the question I want an answer to as well.

Mike,
That is exactly what this feels like!

Yes mine did close the throttle, I caught it once on a datalog after it was misfiring for a few seconds. Self protection.

If I show up at the dealer with the EVO intake, do you think I am SOL? Should I reinstall the stock box if I decide to take it there?

I had this happen shortly after installing my second MAF. I just had the car washed also. I was hoping it wass a water in the intake thing. This is getting crazy.

A. If it turns out to be the MAF or if you think that it might be, I would install the stock airbox. Leave nothing to chance. 100 to 1 they will blame the "oil" on the filter or the filter, itself, as the cause for the "dirty" MAF (if that turns out to be the case).

B. I haven't tried to clean mine just yet. That method was suggested in a thread by a board member when I asked about my CEL. I have also heard of others on this board that have done something similar. Perhaps start a new thread: MAF cleaning techniques? What does everyone do? Etc...

Re cleaning the MAF, I have done it many times on my ESS 8 PSI S/C E39 540 as I have a K&N CAI filter, so the MAF does get some oil residue on it from time to time.

I use Simple Green, 50/50 , let just the element sit in the simple green for 5-10 minutes then completely rince off with cold running water. Then I use 99% IPA and rince it off again and then use a hair drier to blow off any excess IPA, it will evaporate very quickly anyway. Do not use the heat of the hair dries, just ambient air.

Works for me everytime and I have yet to replace my MAF...give it a try.

My dealer told me that Porsche would not cover the MAF for a car with a third party intake...that being said they replaced mine under warranty, cleaned the air filter and it has been running sweat since then!

I think its the plugs. I currently switched my setup and Im boosting to 22 psi(1.3/1.4) bars and Im going thru plugs lke crazy. I swithced them twice in 1 month. what happens is under full load like in 4rth at 5k oh higher the car stutters/ hick ups(as if out of fuel). I have a AEM AFR METER SO I KNOW IM GOOD ON FUEL.its the flugs for sure. I have 3 exra MAFS, one form a boxter as well... i stuck them in one at a lime and the stutter was stick ther. I know this is a minor problem with all higher HP TTs. I seem an EVO 700 gt at my race shop in for service with the same problem.
Its been suggested to go to a bosch 6 plug insted of the beru 6. Alex(sharky preffers then as well.)
hope I helped a bit.
