Ouch!! I have been told that I won't need a complete Rebuild on the gearbox, just changing out the 'bad' synchro-ring. I'll let you what I get back from my shop. Thanks for the input too.

This is correct - a good tech will be able to identify the worn parts related to second gear and replace only them to solve the pop out issue. Financially not too bad...

I have my car serviced at BBI so I will have them get on a quote first. They have been good to deal with so hopefully they will be familiar with this.

Thanks for your response too, that is the answer I was hoping for!

i only had a few worn out parts and this is what it looked like...i was quoted $4,000 until he opened the case..then it became $8,800.
i did used a few upgraded parts, but every little item is very expensive for the these boxes.

it's hard to say what might've inflated the cost from your original estimate? but that sounds like OEM porsche repair, rather than an indie(!) was it. so i wonder if that was oem parts/labor. iirc porsche originally wanted me to commit to the 3k? or so just to open it up, then a determination would be made first as to eventual cost, and second as to which of us would foot the eventual repair bill. fortunately i was able to sway them from their initially defensive and recalcitrant position. i was not to keen on paying that kind of repair money on a recently c'pod car.

scinfidel.. i still think you're at 3500 (ish) 5k tops. don't know if bbi repairs them in house? ( i'll bet you they send em out? ) and if you're getting a decent shake ( read NON OEM ) parts/labor charges.

1st/2nd gears and synchros are max what you should need, provided nothing else has separate issues. some guys go in and add steel gears etc etc. just don't do this anywhere they don't already know about the RESHIMMING. please.

IMA Motorsports in Virginia made the repair. there is a right and wrong way to make every repair and when the labor is about $2,500 to remove and reinstall the gearbox, you should always choose the right way to do it. do not cut corners!!!
i am very happy with my result. the gearbox it very tight and i know that whenever i sell the car it will pass the "sniff test".

the quote is meaningless until they open the box. just interview them on their experience with rebuilding these boxes.

not to argue.. but i'm not so sure that is true. there has been enough documented about this issue by now, that it should be fairly easy for a shop that has experience with this trans and the specifics of it, to give him a quote to replace the 1st/2nd gears and synchros. those are the parts. plus some shims. r&r.

how yours ended up being $8800.00 was a curiosity to me. that's why i asked if those were porsche dealership prices. because that would be the only way to reconcile that high an end cost unless you had a full rebuild which i assume you did? but that's more than is needed for 2nd gear popout. the op already knew this when he began his inquiry here.. unless again, more stuff in your trans needed repair? again, it only affects a few aforementioned parts. possibly you had more stuff going on. perhaps he does as well. but if not? it's not NORMALLY an $8800.00 repair. or shouldn't be. is my point. sorry it was for you.. but again, at least as you say, it's in your past as it is mine.

i just looked at my bill. the total was $8,700 and i had a trans mount and wheel bearings replaced at the same time and those were unrelated to the trans.

the total cost for the gearbox $7,770.00 . im sorry that i was incorrect before, but to me ..whats the difference between nearly $8k and nearly $9k. it aint cheap.

i spoke to many trans builders to include Brian Copans who is the BEST in the buisness and they were all in the same range for this repair. my shop gave me a lower initial quote, but i ended up at the same number that all of the others quoted.

i wish that i wasnt right about the cost , but you will soon find out that i am...

This is way, way too high to repair 2nd gear pop out. It should be about 2K, 3K tops including OEM parts
