Clutch options: Sachs vs clutch master
#16
Btw, out of curiosity, are you running the twin or triple setup? Also, if not going anywhere close to Tim's level of TQ, would either steel or billet be equal in performance and durability?

There are 2 vendors chimed in here. Only one made a sales pitch and it was me. Nowadays everybody is emotionally attached to what they have purchased. Especially if it works to the expectation. The otherwise creates a lifetime opposition to the manufacturer and the product. So to say, if you care to ask any questions, I would be more than happy to explain as to why I advise one product over another in this thread.
OP does not have 1000hp car. What you are suggesting is more than what he needs. He wants something he can live with everyday. Between the CM and the Sachs kit, Sachs is a better option that will serve to higher tq and be VERY close to stock clutch. Proven, no adventures, no room for error, over and over installed by tens of paying sponsors here which makes these forums available to everyone of us.
If I am over the line, and came off strong and disrespectful, I publicly apologize from you. However, it is unfair to talk down on someone who is making an honest suggestion with the anticipation of genuine help to a customer. In return, if we make a sale, GREAT, if not so be it.

Appreciate your advice and honesty. No offense taken and no need to apologize. You've correctly pointed out that I'm no where close to the 1000hp range, nor do I intend on getting there. My goal is about 550-ish....but we'll see.
At the same time, having to do a clutch a second time outweighs any savings from either kit mentioned in the first post. Moreover, if a FW and associated parts are factored in, the difference is no longer as great. The advice to "go with ERP and be over and done with replacing clutches" certainly stands out.
Again, thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences.

I went with the triple for my low 600's hp at the wheels car. I went that option because I knew it was the last clutch my car would likely ever need. The Guys at BBI and Turbo mike from IDP really sold me on how good the clutch is. I had an ACT extreme clutch that was in my car that had less then 3000 miles on it and it was toast.
The steel or billet FW is just a matter of preference for you or almost anyone else. Myself I really like that way the LWFW spins up quickly for down shift blips. I also want to make my limited HP spin up as quick as I can so I did light weight pulleys too. I at least would consider doing the crank pulley as they have been know to be issues. BBI makes a really nice one, or even the EVOM's pulley.
Sorry for bagging on you DBC performance guy, I know you guys fight for sales sometimes in a tight economy. Truly though I have almost zero emotional attachment to any product. What I do have an emotional attachment to is quality and very good customer support. I have been more then happy with ERP's performance and way more then happy with Cary's level of support for his product.
I have had some poor experiences with some Porsche vendors and I have had some really great experiences. Actually more good ones then bad and several that were so good that I giggle to myself and smile.
My clutch gets abused like it is in a stolen taxi that is full of illegal Mexicans trying to get away from boarder security and I just see no other clutch out there that will stand up as well as the ERP unit for as many miles. Maybe I will eat my words in the future but I am doubtful of that.

I just recently did a clutch swap to a Sachs (rated to about 600 hp) with a single mass fly wheel and stiffer pressure plate, along with changing the slave cylinder to the GT2 parts (not the conversion kit but actual parts). The clutch is significantly more stiff but not unreasonable even in stop/go traffic. Clutch engagement is more precise as well.
I have not other basis for comparison on non-OEM clutches for these cars but I'm very pleased with the route I took.

Look at the GMG 3.8 build thread on here from last week. They have a built motor with a Sachs Motorsport clutch. My Rturbo came with a Sachs Motorsport Cluch from RUF and it has been absolutely bullet proof over the last 20k+ miles with frequent track work. GT2 non assist set up, zero noise or chatter, perfect modulation and feel. When I had my gearbox out last fall the clutch was inspected and my mechanic said it was in perfect shape. Just some input from an end user...

well that would be ERP Triple. ERP twin is optimal for 500-750. when you factor the cost of replacing the flywheel or changing to a single LWFW. a lot of people are forgetting how much more forgiving a multi-plate carbon clutch is on the trans and the axels. less shock on the drivetrain is always good.
