Can Exhaust Tips alone change the sound of your Car

Maybe this is the stupidist post I've ever made but I would swear that my enlarged dual Dansk tips actually make my car quieter than the OEM items as they have a longer enclosed end section vs OEM.

I would not think so, especially on tips I have seen for sale, Although on a race car, many peole will use tips to re-direct the flow of the exhaust tip to bring down the noise for db limits of a racetrack. I would assume that only directs the sound away from the noise meter.

On other cars, having exhaust tips directed toward the ground might make the exhaust louder because of the noise reverberating off of the payment.

It depends on what noise level you are referring to. They can effect interior noise for sure. Depending on how far they stick out from under the bumper & their shape, more or less noise will transmit into the interior. Exterior sound should remain essentially the same, however.

Its The Interior Noise

that I am refering to: I would have thought this highly unlikely but it does genuinely seem to make a difference

OK maybe the stupidest response I've ever made...I think of trumpets, the shape of the horn definately affects the sound the trumpet makes. I don't think it affects volume as much as the frequency and therefore what you hear. Of course I could be very wrong.

The farther out the tips extend from the rear fascia, the quieter in the cabin. No difference in loudness to cars behind you if they are pointed straight like OEM . The Dansk tips extend 1.5 inches farther than the oval OEMs .

THe porsche tips are just for looks and bolted onto the actually exhaust unit. What will affect your exhaust tone is the piping diameter, cats vs no cats, and servral other factors. The trumpets your refering do go much futher down the exhaust pipe on the older units.

The size and construction of the exhaust tip can change the tone in your exhaust for sure, it is noticable on stock exhausts with different tips.

After some experimentation

The answer is the obvious one I guess, the exhaust tips DO affect the interior noise but its not the type of tip but how far you mount in on the exit pipe as there is about 5cm of "play" here.

The further out the exhaust tip, the less interior noise
