curious, what made you choose 5/50? we share weather here. seems an odd choice.

The 5W50 will break down quicker then the 5W40 because it is a wider range,,also the Diesel 5W40 will have a better protection package of additives..
I don't think the increase of the 40 to 50 is going to be needed unless extremely hot weather...
Just my thoughts..

TDT oil is specifically for turbo diesel (compression ignition) engines while the 5w-40 oil is for spark ignited engines.

Note Porsche does not even approve TDT for use in its diesel engine vehicles.

It is certainly not approved to use in its sports car engines.

My info is it has a percentage of mineral oil in it and this is counter to Porsche advising only synthetic oils be used.

Just use an approved oil and be done with it. If my 02 Boxster can go 270K miles on (mostly) 0w-40 oil and my 03 Turbo 110K miles on 0w-40 oil (and another Turbo owner has over 350K miles on his untouched engine and runs IIRC 0w-40 oil) I don't see why your car can't get along just fine on 0w-40 oil, or the approved 5w-50 oil if you feel the need for more viscosity.

BTW, I have run this oil in both of my cars but I really can't notice any difference and now my handy Mobil oil distributor has moved/relocated far away it is a pain to get 5w-50 oil so I just have the dealer use 0w-40 oil out of the dispensing oil gun.

Try Amazon prime; free shipping . That's where I'm ordering mine. I'll get 12 quarts; should leave enough for topping off. The 0w-40 is probably good enough but since inland areas can easily get 100+ in the summer, I figured 5w-50 wouldn't hurt and it is indeed on the approved oil list (for whatever that's worth).

you also might want to consider looking at Joe Gibbs racing oil DT40

expensive but good stuff

Uh, did I also mention I'm lazy.

The service manager at the dealer where I have my cars serviced told me he can order Mobil 1 5w-50 oil from a local auto parts store (Monument?) in the morning and have it delivered that same day at no added cost but I just don't want to bother with it.

The engines in both cars sound just fine with Mobil 1 0w-40 oil in them and I've run the engines in 100F+ heat many times with no trouble.

Besides, the Boxster engine (at least) gets its coolant up to 226F on days that are much cooler than 100F which is the same coolant temp I saw when I drove the car in 116F heat so there's nothing magical about 100F vs. 90F or even 85F ambient temperature for a hard working engine.

So I just ask that Mobil 1 0w-40 oil be used and worry about other things.

i have an *occasional* sound at cold startup in +100 temps that would curl the hair on a cat. a little dab here and there of the 5/40 seems to lessen it. it is as if ( and is ) all the 0 part of the 0/40 has turned into hot crisco and is protecting/lubing nothing at all for that millisecond it takes to pump. then, all is as it should be. awful sound though. i'm lazy too.

Gotcha. I didn't realize you brought it in. That said, I am lazy too and it is actually more of a hassle to bring the car to my mechanic during the week than to just do it myself over a beer on the weekend

I've run M1 0w-40, M1 5w-50, and TDT, my car is quieter at start up with the TDT. If you dig into it more what you read is that Mobil have taken lubricant additives out of their oils (I think for some environmental reason). The diesel synthetics still have the additives as these engines are more demanding.

If one is concerned about convenience, you can get the TDT and Rotella in gallon jugs from the local parts store and Walmart, it's also cheaper.

BTW, I replace my oil between 4 - 5k, have it analyzed each time. Similar results for impurities with all of them. The car has lived in FL & AZ, it rarely sees the cold.

I use this specific type...works well and the engine purrs. Also it is the recommended weight for the the Merc S550...so if you have both you can kill two birds with one stone.
