I am including the last few months of the email thread here so everyone can see the progress (or lack of progress) as it happened. The short story, if you want to skip the details below is - The factory will be making the LEDs without any further requirements for commitments from the members on 6SO. I will let you know when they are ready.

Basically, the factory is unwilling to make the taillights because they said 250 sets cannot cover their investment on the new molding and development cost. ?

When I contacted you a year ago, I asked exactly what was necessary for the factory to make the lights. You said that you spoke to the factory and replied that we needed 500 orders at $300 each in order to move forward. I did not make up these numbers – YOU gave these requirements to me.
I organized exactly that amount for you. Now that the required customers have been established, you tell me that the numbers specified are not sufficient. A lot of work and effort went into getting the support for this.
You have not been dealing with me in good faith! You have let down 250 potential customers.
Please reply with the contact at the factory so that I may deal with someone who will be honest with me about the numbers required for this project.
If you are not going to help – get out of the way.

So sorry for the delay. The factory is making the artwork of 996 Turbo LED Taillight and would like to check whether there is an enough space to put the resistors behind the taillight. Do you think you can take some photos of the taillight removed? Like the attached photos Thank you.

So, it the factory willing to make them?
I have included the pictures you requested (and a few more). There is a lot of room behind the lights to include an enclosure for resistors. I have included a picture showing the shape of the rear of the OEM tail lights as they slide into position for your reference.

Thank you for your fast respond on the photos. Yes, the factory is back to the project t to make them. However, they will be making them for themselves and sale it to dealers likes. I will keep you posted. Thank you.

When are you expecting production to begin? Will our group be used for evaluation of the first prototypes (they are a very discerning group and would ensure the quality and functionality meets popular expectation)? Will our group have first access to the order process?

Yes, if your group are willing to help out with testing the unit, I am assure you will get the first batch.

 

Slider, you've been amazing. You've continued to push for us and on behalf of all of us 996TT owners, THANK YOU.

If this works out, great. If it doesn't, so be it. The world will continue to go 'round and we'll all live as we were without pretty tail lights.

ok so what i see out of this is the factory (whoever they may be ) is going to make them and sell them only to their wholesaler who in turn will sell them to their dealer network who will sell them to the public. any public at a as yet unknown price. the person you have spent so much time with has no control over the group getting any units first or the cost as the factory is running the entire show at their pace.

highly unlikely the "test group" will be the 250 individuals who wanted these in the first place. rather you and maybe 2 or 3 more?

have i summed this up?

interesting the only minor deposit was refunded by the contact person. the last failed group buy i was involved with was custom headers that were 1000$ each. they wanted 20 buyers with 100$ deposit. we fulfilled our end and after 2 yrs they simply refunded the deposit to remove themselves from any further obligation. of course they said they would continue to design them and to date nothing has materialized.

 

slider you are to be commended seriously...but i 2nd 32crazys concerns
this doesn't sound very promising for the 6spd'rs being first IF and when they do get made the way i read it. what is a reality is there is still "talk about it". i hope i am missing something.. and it happens eventually.

 

I agree with the concerns and I will certainly continue to harass CarGym until we see a product or until I get access to the manufacturer.

only to add that the fact you put your $ deposit down essentially on all of our behalf, is further to your credit. we shall see.. and hope. still, points for you, regardless of the outcome.

 

So they're making molds for these lights but can't afford to buy a set of factory 996tt lights to copy the exact dimensions for fitment purposes??? Instead they are relying on pictures??? So, once an LED bulb goes out, who will be supplying replacements? Has that been addressed?

 

Having a set of lights wouldn't help - they wanted to see how much room was available behind the lights. What they need is a whole car.

I wouldn't worry about any of the details until they unveil a product. If they are the manufacturer that supplies all the other LEDs supplied by CarGym, they have considerable experience in this stuff already and should be able to produce something nice. Time will tell.
