Another misfire thread...FR6-LDC vs. BKR7E
A few weeks ago I spent the day replacing plugs, DV's, front O2 sensors, MAF and fuel filter in an effort to cure a hesitation throughout the rev range and noticeable power loss during some pulls. After all the work was done, the high speed performance was better but the car was running "weaker" overall and misfiring steadily.
Yesterday I finally did a durametric scan and found that the number 1 cylinder was the culprit, misfiring once every couple seconds. Other random cylinders also had misfires but 1 was far worse.
I decided to bite the bullet and change the plugs AGAIN and swap the coils between 1-2 to see if there was a coil issue also. This time I had to go to a local shop to get the plugs because I wanted to do it right away so instead of Bosch which I usually use I went with NGK. I also gapped them at .030 instead of .026 (and gapping these is much easier because of traditional single electrode).
I finally know what the car should feel like...this is the best it has run since I upgraded to A28's a few months back. Zero misfires on durametric and seat of the pants (and traction control warning lights) don't lie. It is far more powerful and smoother now. I thought after upgrading to 72lb injectors I was just going to have to deal with rough idling and misfiring as a side effect, but now I know how the car should have run from day 1 of the upgrade.
The reason for this thread is that during all my searches for spark plug info on 6SO I found the general consensus was that either Bosch FR6LDC or NGK BK7RE were great plugs for a 1.4 bar 996TT when gapped to .025 - .028. Maybe I got a bad batch of FR6LDCs or maybe because of the side twin electrode I just didn't gap them properly with my gapping tool but a slightly bigger gap on NGK BKR7E was a winning move and I couldn't be happier to have a great running car...the best it has performed since I bought it!
