Snapped timing chain?

actually i'm afraid to look since miles ruin pricing it seems but since its initially just trans work for me, selling wasn't a consideration although i've got north of 100 k miles on it that's one reason i'm doing stuff to it, but i think the same as you re: "what could go next"? esp at 100k miles. i just meant 997.1 territory if i used the repair $ to slide into one instead of fixing this one. but then i'd probably have paper too!
your decision is tougher than mine, thats for sure.

It must be a texas thing... I'm going to have TPWS in Austin take it apart and rebuild it.
I'm going to ask them to take lots of pictures because i really want to see what it looks like in pieces, and that's probably preferable to me hanging over their shoulder for a couple weeks.

Will do. I actually just got a call from the shop, they were asking me how it happened. the chief mechanic was surprised that it happened when I was going at 20mph with zero overrevs, which would be hard to do on a automatic.

The engine is alive again. I've put around 500 miles on it since i got it back, took a bit of time because i was out for a couple weeks.
So far the engine feels great, i'd say stronger than before but that could be because i didn't drive it for 2 months.
I think the engine also stopped making that chain rattle noise that it used to at idle. I hear that most 996TTs/996s in general make that though, so it's probably a matter of it breaking in some more.
All in all the car now has a practically new engine and some other assorted bits, so hopefully it'll be super reliable for a while.

996 tt black plastic in oil filter
When should the amount of black plastic bits be a concern on 996 TT (98K miles)? I understand that some might be from Chain tensioner wear or valve cover seals. What's the recommended replacement or rebuilding of the chain? I've own two Buick grand nationals and know that they the timing chain guard/snub was always a 100K wear out item.

You can change timing chain tensioners in an hour with\ motor in the car. Top one required alternator removal, but it's a piece of cake job. Do it as preventative maintenance at 100k for sure. But, even when the tensioner fails, it still works, just gets very noisy. Has a super strong spring, with a hydraulic dampener.

Chain guides be replaced the same time as tensioners?
I want to know if I can perform a Chain guide(s) and chain tensioners with 996 tt engine in the car. Any links or video on how to do this. Was told this was a 1-2 hr job. Can anyone else really verify this?
