996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

I think we need to rename Sharky's car to Blackbird.

I do applaud this accomplishment don't get me wrong, but you said the fastest tt in the US and did not qualify that. If you said fastest tt at the dragstrip with a slip to prove it then you are probably correct.
Now take that GT1000 versus Alex's car on the highway from 60 mph up and I would bet on the GT1000. But enough of this jargon.
Alex you da the Man! King of the quarter mile until someone else can knock you off and provide a slip.

I agree with Buddy on this one, a 60mph-up run can maybe show more how much hp the car has. I think nothing will take away Alex's excellent run, I said it before Alex must be one hell of a launch expert and his car is certainly one of the fastest around..

There are a few things that need to be clarified however..

Tiptronic vs. manual: A tiptronic can be set (tires and Rev limiter) to run through 138 mph in third gear, whereas a manual will be in 4th at best, in 5th gear most likely.

That is about 0.5 sec (if in 4th.) to 1.0 sec (if in 5th. gear) . at least in gained time over a manual car.
Furthermore, a tiptronic will shift and engage clutch faster than a manual car, around 0.2 seconds faster every shift and 0.1s. faster clutch engagement. If you do the math, a manual 996TT with the same weight and HP can be between 1.0-1.5 seconds slower in the quartermile, all else being equal. All this is a bit exagerated as shorter gears will make you accelerate a bit faster.

Where a manual would gain sometime is in the launch, which in this case, and with Sharkey behind the wheel is not even there.

His HP is shown through his trap speed of 135 mph, around 600 -620 Flywheel maybe (running 26+ psi of boost) for the short duration of the run.

If his car was a 145mph car, his time would not be better as he will have shifted one time more anyway, except if the torque converter can be set to accomodate that speed with a shift less.

930's are running mid- 9sec. with 146mph trap speeds with 3-4 gear changes, where a 996TT would be in 5th. If you are into quartermile runs, change your gearbox ratios, put taller gears.

Alex, please don't think that I mean to take anything away from your success, and I am very happy for you, well done!

I had the opportunity to spend the day at the track with Alex and James and had a great time......They are still driving home and since I live in Stockton (only 30 min. from the track) here are the pics of his 60ft. and time.....

(By the way, we sat there and watched domestics with big *** hoods and Slicks the size of half the car and they were pulling 10.7's and 10.8's.....while Alex came in and ran 10.6's)

Freakin Sick man
Yeah and they were probably so loud you couldn't hear a bomb go off! Had to be hard for some of those boys to be getting beat by a PORSCHE on the quarter mile track and then because they are narrowed and tubbed can barely go around a corner!

HOW SWEET!

Videos and timeslip scanned on the way. No BS, all parts all available from Sharkwerks/EVO/GIAC. The incredible run wasn't done on an infinite budget, bull**** one off parts from BFE or any of that jazz.

Sharky would like to thank Todd and Mike @ EVO, James at Sharkwerks, a grouphug to Garret and Andy at GIAC, Joan for paying the bills/putting up with his **** and everyone that's come down to the shop to show support.

I guess this is additional proof that the Tip isn't too slow.

Lastly I'd like to give a big congrats to Sharky on this run as its been a stressful time for him. Good job Alex!

More to come....
Thanks for the post pal. The thing that's missing from the mullet-ized drag strip is a wireless access point but thank heavens for cell phone technology...

Where to start?!?! It really was a fantasticly fun day. The heat was pretty unbearable (hey the car is black too) but I'm glad we went. Thanks so much to Andrew W for being there for support- great to have you there man! The guys at Sacramento Raceway were just brilliant and egging me on to do more

Remember guys, it's only the first time we've gone since getting the car back so it was more of a test to see what would/could happen. We'll maybe go back and do it again some point and set the car up properly.

Things that we could and should improve on:

1)Take the weight out again: I can and should take out another 100pounds as I did when running that last year. I still had a heavy battery, second seat blach blah...
2)Run ONLY one blend of gas and don't mix and match. I lost a couple of PSI as the temps cooled down as I went to a lower octane since that's all I could get at the time.
3)Get rid of 3 degrees of -ive camber. That's just silly lol... and I could perhaps give it a shot in terms of a 1.5x or something? Never know.
4)Get some new tires. These Toyos are excellent but pretty darn worn out and still the same ones from the shoot out. They've gotten pretty hard over time also. Not sure I want to get drag radials but I might.
5)This is a BIG ONE. Hook up my Wideband 02 kit fully and data log the **** out of it to see what/if can be adjusted
6)Be braver on the launches. To be honest, the torque converter scares me. One launch where I gave it a good go, the car almost walked into the other lane... So I need bigger *****.
7)Try to find a better time to run full-on when it's not 103 degrees lol! I think the car has some more MPH in it with better grade gas and lower temps. But saying I "think" is not worth anything until I go back and actually see if that's true

Cheers Budman!

I was real happy with how the 1st outing went factoring everyting in. My best launch/run sadly didn't work out... I pulled a 1.62 60 foot, then blew the MAF and lost power. The end result was a 10.62 @ 132 instead of maybe a 10.5/10.4 @ 135+? We'll never know on that one...

No doubt! His car is so hard to control. Two pro drivers barely managed to keep it in a straight line lol!

Alex isn't going to come on and spam excuses as to why he didn't trap higher or get a better ET but we do know he has additional room for a quicker time and trap speed. Alignment, tire (he's on street tire), additional engine tuning, better track prep, cooler temps and so on will all lead to even better future times but that's up to Alex to release . This doesn't even include future top secret Sharkwerks products that may surface in the not too distant future....

I'm giving Alex updates from home base as he's still at the track waiting for additional runs tonight. He appreciates all the support and will reply to this thread once he's back some time tonight.
I coulda, woulda, shoulda run 9s because it's EASY. Next week garantWeed But seriously, I know we have some things to do if I am to prepare the car properly for another go. I know it was hot, I have too much camber etc.. etc.. and there's always room for improvement but sometimes you just have to run what ya' brung and see what happens

I'm excited to see EVO/GIAC and us set a new 996TT 1/4 mile record which I'm sure won't last long it's good to see these slow-*** tips can really do deep 10s.

One thing I would like to mention is that I must have made 8-9 runs and every single run except when I let off after the MAF was gone (I ran 11.15 @ 105 lol) the car ran between 10.6-10.8 everytime. Solid.

Tips are so HOT right now!

But seriously, the whole tip thing is looking pretty sweet thanks to Sharky! [edit] Sharky - at what RPM does the torque converter start to bite?
