I think we need to rename Sharky's car to Blackbird.

I'm sorry but your theory on Tip vs. Manual doesn't work that way in the real world. The Tip isn't the big reason he's smoking many other claimed to be fast Porsches.
It's funny how people are downplaying what he did then saying they're not trying to take anything away from it. How about some people stop making excuses and make a quicker (996TT) car?

I agree with Buddy on this one, a 60mph-up run can maybe show more how much hp the car has. I think nothing will take away Alex's excellent run, I said it before Alex must be one hell of a launch expert and his car is certainly one of the fastest around..
There are a few things that need to be clarified however..
Tiptronic vs. manual: A tiptronic can be set (tires and Rev limiter) to run through 138 mph in third gear, whereas a manual will be in 4th at best, in 5th gear most likely.
That is about 0.5 sec (if in 4th.) to 1.0 sec (if in 5th. gear) . at least in gained time over a manual car.
Furthermore, a tiptronic will shift and engage clutch faster than a manual car, around 0.2 seconds faster every shift and 0.1s. faster clutch engagement. If you do the math, a manual 996TT with the same weight and HP can be between 1.0-1.5 seconds slower in the quartermile, all else being equal. All this is a bit exagerated as shorter gears will make you accelerate a bit faster.
Where a manual would gain sometime is in the launch, which in this case, and with Sharkey behind the wheel is not even there.
His HP is shown through his trap speed of 135 mph, around 600 -620 Flywheel maybe (running 26+ psi of boost) for the short duration of the run.
If his car was a 145mph car, his time would not be better as he will have shifted one time more anyway, except if the torque converter can be set to accomodate that speed with a shift less.
930's are running mid- 9sec. with 146mph trap speeds with 3-4 gear changes, where a 996TT would be in 5th. If you are into quartermile runs, change your gearbox ratios, put taller gears.
Alex, please don't think that I mean to take anything away from your success, and I am very happy for you, well done!

I'm not really sure who that statement is being directed to? Alex and I are friends. Back in May 2003 he was present when we turned a sixty foot time of 1.603, the ambient temps were about the same, maybe a little higher.
Oh, and welcome to the club of downplaying and being made fun of. I discovered it comes with the turf. Maybe now you understand why I haven't published any times since my Excellence article.

It took me a few minutes to write my previous post having done some research in order for some people on this board to maybe benefit from it in their search for better times.
If nothing else, out of courtesy, maybe you should do the same and bring technical info here that would support your otherwise general, non factual and rather personal attack statement. "In the real world"? I started racing 20 years ago, I have an idea what real world is.
I have no interest in downplaying Sharkey's times, I actually like him and consider him a true passionate Porschefile, which is about what matters only to me.
People here can read my post and make of it what they want, it is their choice, I am bringing another perspective to the table that's all. As I said, I could be wrong and it would not matter either, but please try to put more meat into your comments before attacking someone on the net.
No one can take Sharkey 's accomplishment from him, and I am certainly not trying to, gearbox choice is just like engine mods, not using it to its full potential would actually be stupid.
I will try to keep my posts at a non-technical level and with many smileys going forward, it seems that they are better appreciated over here. Regards.

Chad, I was quoting Jean and was just saying I disagreed with him.

Jean, let me start by saying it wasn't a personal attack on you but clearly making it known that I disagree. If you care to take it as a personal attack then maybe you need to have a drink or take a vacation. You're making this tense when it clearly isn't.
We don't have to get too technical (and waste 15-20 minutes of my time) to break your theory on the huge advantage of automatics over manuals. You claim that a Tip will be 1-1.5 seconds quicker in the quarter mile than a comparable manual trans car. This isn't true as we've seen various magazines test both and not see that kind of a difference. Often the difference is that the manual is actually quicker at the quarter mile in their testing.
EDIT:
I do think you are being a bit insensitive to what you say when you claim you aren't downplaying Alex's accomplishment. You congratulate him and then in the same post tell him it's not that special because others are faster. That's called downplaying what someone's done.
