Alternator Failing... can I drive it..?

simply testing with a m/m may not show the issue

it's real easy to see how i could've further loosened an already loose wire exploring the newfound "limits" of rwd with the tbd
thx for the help fellas.

new bosch ALT part supercedes the older 996 part = 997-603-012-09-M14 for 6MT. $428 shipped at pelican. was hoping it was a ground strap or cable corroded. just not that lucky ..

On the topic of alternators, autozone and several other place sell Bosch alternators. Has anybody checked to see if they carry ours? You can usually cut the Porsche price in half for the exact same part. Unless of course you have to have it in a Porsche box . They had alternators for my Audi and Volkswagen and it was the exact same. Just a thought.

good advice. though i'm fairly certain 428 no shipping is about the best we could hope for a new bosch. after the way my car runs after FINALLY running the bosch oem, i'm liking that yellow oem box.

Search for people that tried autozone it didnt work out for them very well. It's not your alternator i thought it was mine and i found a loose wire. If you want to just replace the regulator its 36.00 dollars but its not the problem.

with 111k miles, even if it isn't the alternator that failed, it has outlved its normal life so for the $428 its time and a simple r&r.

i've watched carefuly how it failed, and am as sure as i can be it isn't a cable or ground or power wire to starter being loose. after a week of having the light go on/off and volts fluctuate down to 11.8! i tried to start it with all lights on and it finally "went", and now battery fail light is solidly ON. it's also not worth it to just replace the VR since the alt has to come out anyway and the new one obviously has a new volt reg too.

When my other porsche alternator failed i start the car then after 10 min it starts to drop to 12.5 volts and never went back up unless the regulator cools off thats what goes on these alternators its the heat. When i did the load test at autozone it said failed the battery was not charging.

When they fail the voltage does not go back up to 13.8 and bounce around thats a sign of a bad wire. When this exact same thing happened to me i founf my alternator wire loose also had corrosion on it.

that's when i ordered the new alt. i'll have it on tonight and will let ya know, but i'm confident the new part will do it. even if it was a voltage reg, i'll have both new with the new alt. the thing is, i have over 100k miles on the car, i drive it hard every day, and sh*t breaks so i pay to play.

new bosch alternator r&r'd in 57 minutes in semi darkness in my driveway with bats ( literally ) flying and dive bombing from above. amp gauge is SOLID 14 idling. 13.8 with lights on.
problem solved!

Links? A Bosch alternator is a Bosch alternator regardless of the box it comes in. Maybe they used an off brand?

even the bosch oem box made a point of the word "NEW" on it, which i've never seen before.
