Thanks for all the input. That's really made me feel better about finding the right car for me at the right price.

I don't know where you see the prices heating up, I would say they are holding steady value and have kind of hit they're low. I personally think it's going to take a few more years before the 996 prices will go up, once people start realizing that even the most amazing automatic transmissions cannot beat the feel of driving a manual. It's like back in the 70's when battery operated watches became really popular and everyone tossed the mechanical watches aside, it was only a matter of time before the mechanical watch became popular again and people realized how much better they actually were.

price help

I've been looking online here and other sites trying to get an idea of current pricing for a 2001 996TT. I am considering putting mine up for sale and am also having a hard time deciding on lissting price. It's Seal Gray/Tan 6 speed, 60k miles, serviced and lightly modded by Marsky. (911 tuning). It's a Beauty & the Beast but never tracked or over-revved. Like others I would rather list it here and have a member continue to enjoy it. I fully understand each one is different and so pricing is reasonable all the way to rediculous. Just trying to get a perspective from fellow forum members who may have been more on top of this than I have for a while. Feel free to PM opinions, questions (and/or insults :-)) If it's reasonable I'm happy to oput pics and all the details int he classified section.

As another data point I just spent $55k for 04 turbo cab with 18k miles, Nav and several factory upgrades minus the removable hardtop. Needed rear tires but perfect other than that got it from dealer in exotics only

If anyone is interested I will be posting my step brother's 2002 996TT for sale soon. Polar silver on black, 73K miles, great records! Will be getting new rear tires, oil change and alignment tomorrow. He will be looking to get in the ~$40K area.

What is it with prices though? They are all over the map!
I'm seeing asking prices over $13k more than KBB. The most egregious example is a private seller here in CA asking $52k for an '03 with 50k miles. KBB estimates the value of that vehicle to be ~$39k.
I understand private sellers can list any asking price they please, but dealers? If I were to trade a car, they'd be quoting the gospel of their NADA price guide for the trade-in value. However, even the dealers are asking $5-$10k more than any value I can find online. KBB/Edmunds and NADA agree pretty well with each other.

I'm not really looking for an answer, more taking the opportunity to rant

Feel free to chime in...
Very tough to get a feel for the market since there are so few sales. I've been looking at 2010-2012 Turbo/Turbo S and find the same is true. Here is the market report for 2004 models. As you can see, very few sales and pricing is not constant. I say be patient and a good deal will come along. The really high price cars don't seem to be selling and I see them listed for sale for several months with no movement. You can always make an offer-can't tell you how many times I've been told "no". Good luck.

I think there are some really good deals to be had, especially in the midwest and east due to the weather. I dont think there were a lot of people out buying sports cars when there was feet of snow falling.

Yes sir-my experience has been the best time to buy is when there is snow on the ground-end of year.

I've seen them in the range of 35-45k for a non-x50 non-S models, depending on the mileage, condition, etc.,. I've seen several on ebay from indy or third party dealers in the mid to high-30s with no warranty, and from reputable Porsche or certified dealers in low 40s. Once you start talking x50 or turbos, extremely low mileage ones can go over 50 easily.
Your best deals would be from a private seller who has more flexibility on price, its usually not worth it to trade it in, so if you can beat dealer trade-in value plus some margin you can score a good deal.
