*SOLVED* HRE wheels making clicking/ticking sound.

Hey everyone, as stated in the title, my HRE 543s are making a ticking/clicking sound under a load. It is mostly the rears when I am cornering. I took them off the car and installed my GT3 wheels, and the clicking is gone. I have the proper style and length lug bolts. The wheels and rotors are free of corrosion. The wheels were built for a 996tt, so the offset and hub bore is proper.

Has anyone encountered noisy 3 piece wheels? Any solutions? I will deflate and check the torque on each wheel bolt/nut next..

Thanks

I would say the Gt3 rims were 18 inch ? Other then the bolts not being tight on the 3pc that's a tough one. The wider rims/tires stress maybe worn axle

You're correct, the GT3s are 18s. I'm guessing its the wheel hardware. The wheel bearings and axles are good. That was my first thought. I've read threads on other forums where people have had similar issues with 3 piece wheels. I haven't found a definitive answer.

Ill call HRE tomorrow and see what they say. Maybe I'll do a full rebuild on the wheels for piece of mind.

I agree with people saying the hardware on the barrel could be old. They have a very specific torque spec on each of the bolts around the edge, so don't just take them apart/tighten them. HRE will know what to do... Hopefully you can get a hold of them fine- They seem like the busiest company on earth whenever I contact them. GL!

I spoke with HRE this morning. They didnt have a solution for me. They verified that the wheel bolts should be torqued at 22 ft/lbs. They said their hardware does not stretch or fatigue over time. The wheels were built in 04 and have never been split. I am going to verify proper torque on all bolts. Maybe its time for a rebuild and fresh powder coat.

You sure your lugs were tightened properly? Seems easy but I've seen it screwed up and can make bad sounds..

They were torqued properly. I removed and re-torqued the wheels as a preventative measure.

Just send them into HRE to pull apart, inspect and fix. Although the purchase price is pretty high the cost to repair/fix wheels is very reasonable. They always back their product 100%.

I prefer the hands on approach. If I cant solve it, they'll be sent out.

UPDATE. I checked and re-torqued all the wheel bolts. I'd say 60% of the bolts were between 17-20 ft/lbs. (digital torque wrench) Now that all bolt are torqued to spec, I am going to install and test drive. I will post results later today

Problem solved. Wheels are installed and the clicking is gone. Cause was improper torque on wheel bolts.

Thanks for the input, everyone!
