my wholly unnecessary point, was/is that there is no "x50 motor". period. but it's a stickler detail, admittedly but a guy should know what he's got, or doesn't. thats all.

32krazy....the plan is to do it this weekend. PLEASE come help!!! I can provide beer and a couch for you to sleep on! '02996ttx50....I never called it an x50 engine or x50 motor. Someone asked what I got and for how much. I was willing to pay a little extra to get the larger turbos, so I thought that the x50 description was pertinent to the question.

Ok...the engine is out. It was not hard, just tedious. Here are some observations. The fabspeed exhaust was full of oil coming from the left side turbo. There was a quart or more on the trailer and another quart or more gushed out when I removed it. The Oil tank had oil in it, but the crankcase was full of an oil/antifreeze mix! I removed chunks of what appear to be piston from the crankcase through the drain plug hole. The exhaust has a hole where it rusted through. You can see it on the front of the engine.
The intake was full of metal shavings.
Separating the transmission took entirely too long!!! It was not obvious to me that there was a plastic cover over the threads in the pivot rod. I spent 2-3 hours trying to figure it out. Apparently, the cover is supposed to be loose once the plate that holds it in place is removed. This was not the case for mine. It was stuck firm and no amount of tugging, pulling or prying would budge it! I finally ended up drilling a sheet metal screw into it and popping it out, but that was in final desperation. This is something worth knowing for the next guy!

have you reinstalled the new engine? I'm off all week if you want to tackle the job. just let me know
you can use long nose vise grips to get the plug out. drill it for a 80mm long 8mm threaded bolt and you will be much happier reinstalling it

Man, I wish I could take you up on that offer!!! I'll be on a plane in a couple of hours, returning late Friday night. I am going to take some time and make sure to do everything I need to get it right. I cannot afford to do the slave cylinder replacement as some have suggested, but I was happy with my clutch as it was. I never had issues. Are those who changed theirs doing for improved clutch feel or as a prophylactic measure against future failure? Also, someone said that with my "new" '03 power steering pump/rez, that the change would be perfect. Is that due to the lack of the outlet holes on the tiptronic rez?
