Tranny noise on acceleration and in neutral

Let me explain: In the higher gears 4th and up, I am hearing a growl/bearing type sound when accelerating. If I was to guess, I would say pinion bearing-noise seems to be coming from the rear. However, if I am cruising at 70 mph or so if I put the tranny in neutral, I also hear this sound and when I apply the brakes, the sound goes away. Now a little history, I did not hear this sound before I changed tires. I changed the rears and I got massive PSM intervention. Then I changed the fronts and PSM problem solved, but then I started to hear this howl. What do you guys think?
And thanks for reading this long story saga, Mike
PS I also have the LWF

you may be right, and need to replace your transmission bearings. but if you're lucky? it could simply be a wheel bearing, although that you should hear most any gear, anytime. 3rd or 4th and decelerating particularly? it's trans bearings.

though "howl" is how i'd describe a bad wheel bearing. while bad trans bearings "whine".

this could also all be explained simply by a bad stretch of road lol.

In my case its always Murphy's law and the worse proves to be the case. I hope you are luckier...; my money is on the gbox bearings.

However, as noise began as you've changed tyres I would also consider the front diff. Front diff can make noise if wrong tyre (circumference) sizes are mounted.

911turborookie is infamous around these parts
Same problem but with tiptronic

Hey guys I am having the same problem- cars currently at transmission shop - whine happen to be coming from gbox- any ideas or recommendations on where to get replacement bearings for a tippy gbox? Or maybe some part numbers to cross reference? I'm trying to get some pics posted maybe you guys know which one it is -

The irony behind your posts is I did recently have my tires (michelins) changed / then my problem started - although they did sound diagnostic/test and said it's coming from the front gearbox - took front access cover off and stated there is wear on the bearings. Do now we are hunting for replacements rather than a complete rebuild /
Any help is greatly appreciated -

I had a clunk noise about a year ago. Turned out to be the DMF

I know there is more involved then just miles causing these issues but am still curious of the mileage on these cars with worn mounts/bearings etc.

at the risk of repeating myself. you have bearings gone bad.
This is a pinion bearing, thrust bearing problem. The part number is
999-052-164-00

if its the trans its a good time to consider a built trans. these are m/b transmissions so paramount performance or southern hot rods can build you a beast if you want big hp
