Should I put the front driveshaft back?
I pulled it out to have it dyno'd.
I daily drive it on r888. When it rains I get a bit nervous about standing puddles, but it's been alright.
It's maybe been out for 900 or so miles.
Can't decide...

I know the purpose of removing the front driveshaft is to have all the power go to the rear wheels.
But I always wondered how much power difference it makes? The transmission is still sending power to the front driveshaft yoke still. The car doesn't know that front driveshaft isn't there .... am I wrong?

yes, the car only sends the power to the front thru the driveshaft so it doesn't "know it" any more. so, add a proper lsd or even a torque biasing differential ( e.g. wavetrac.. a killer mod ) as I've done and it dramatically improves the power delivery, esp in tight corners since there is no more "open" differential power loss as there is with simply removing the cardan shaft. which i didn't like for exactly that reason, ya still get rear wheel spin which mostly sucks. the tbd will eliminate that completely.
think of it as "positraction" for your tt lol

Maybe a little more pep. I only pulled the shaft though. Still has diff and axles so no weight loss.
It drives a bit different and I break the tires loose more. I'm no pro driver and have zero track experience so I can't tell you what I'm feeling.

Ya. Sort of. I've had little interest so I may get to keep it after all. Besides it pretty quick to pop the shaft in there if someone wants to see the car.
Mostly I'm bored and miss "the next mod" planning stages

i've stopped just short of the gt2/3 uprights/stub the axles etc etc and suspension fiddling as i can see no discernible benefit ( or should i say shortcomings? ) to the way the car works for me now. so i will for the forseeable future remain rwd without ( in technical terms ) all the *proper* bits. the rwd with the tbd lsd is just about perfect for my needs. though admittedly the suspension geometry is not where it could be for my having half-assed ( maybe 3/4??) it.
though i will say that running the car while merely removing the cardan and not addressing the added power/wheel spin to the rear(s) is a dubious proposition at best.

this was the first mod i did. 2 yrs later added a wavetrac lsd and can't even fathom going back. the lsd transforms the way the car drives and feels with a rwd conversion. add a fresh set of rebuilt coil overs and i now know why people obsess over driving their porsches every day.

At this point I have no plans for an LSD. I do have pss9 but they came on the car so I know no different.
Money is tight with a new business and stupid legal fees regarding a junk lawsuit that my old boss has initiated against me so I may just put the shaft back in.
I had no complaints about the awd.

i'd put it back on then. the car doesn't drive *better* for having taken it off, that i'm sure of. though knowing what i know now i do have complaints about the awd setup and the significantly different delivery of power to the *wheels* vs rwd. i had nothing to compare to before the difference isn't theoretical,.. more like night/day. but i don't have snow or rain which is the only way i can see it *helping* drivability at all.
if lived in deutschland and could drive 100+ in the rain, i might think differently.

Mine has been converted (viscous coupler, drove shaft and axles removed). There's a noticeable difference in the quickness of the engine revving and the car feels faster. Additionally, the steering is quicker and lighter and I don't feel any difference at high speed. I'm definitely adding an LSD soon. I love this car even more. Thanks BHT, 4080, CRR and Pauliewalnuts for showing me the light.

I haven't driven it on a road course in 2WD, so I can't say how the lack of an LSD will effect the handling. However, on the road and very spirited driving (e.g. high boost in both straight and turns - I flog my car and often), no ill characteristics. If it's primarily a street car not having an LSD will go unnoticed. If dig or road racing, I could see how having an open diff would be bad. I was skeptical and delayed going to 2WD until I could install an LSD. Being not sure what my next step is with the car, I succumbed to peer pressure and converted. Glad I did.
