MAF - What is it good for, absolutely nothing

MAF - What is it good for, absolutely nothing, or in my case RTFF

thanks to everyone for info on this forum from a newbie 996 Turbo owner.

I had quite the fun weekend

Okay, I lent my car to a mate Saturday morning in a swap for his very nice, but extremely flawed 12C (radio doesnt work, SATNAV effed etc). So it appears he took my little 996 TTS for quite the drive, increased stage 1 revs by 4000 and stage 2 by 400, which given my 7000 rpm limter is tough to do. I did an ECU read today and saw the lovely results...

anyway, here is what happened:

He called me from a gas station to top up, so i told him 5 gallons of 93 oct and 1 gallon of E85, idiot did reverse and the car coughed and spluttered on the way home. I assumed the problem with the car was because it was uber lean because of the E35 instead of E20 or so I use.

So I did what I usually do and rang/texted Tim and annoyed him and he said drain tank.

Of course this idiot (being me) did not RTFF about draining the tank and went to the local hardware store to buy some siphons.... I put about 2 feet of tubing in to the tank via the gas cap filler not realizing that would not work.

By Sat night I was fuming. So Sun morning, I took apart the fueling area to move aside the intank HPFP and drained all of 12 smelly gallons of E35 gas from my tank. I then filled her with 93 octane and after almost passing out from fumes, started the car.

Meh, she coughed and spluttered and died.

So I texted Tim..... he said disconnect battery etc, did so, same thing and I got the dreaded PASM/ABS failure warning which I assumed meant I had other more dire problems.

So I reflashed the ECU, started her, she coughed and searched for idle and died again.

Turned ignition off and on and ABS/PASM warning was not there but after 5 mins idling, the warning came back up.

Now I am even more confused. So I go and read the ECU faults with the Eurodyne software and got the P0102 code, MAF low reading yada yada.

Then today I RTFF and saw this thread amongst others https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-3rd-time.html

So, moral to the story, is RTFF and MAF, what is it good for !

BTW god bless all of our troops.... I'm an ex military lad myself

Somewhat off topic, but I thought only DI engines have a HPFP? I've never seen anyone refer to any 996TT pump (stock or aftermarket) as "HP" before.

Sad story and exactly why no one drives my car other than myself. Hope you get it sorted, with Tim on your team should be no problem.

i have to say i was expecting the original by edwin star but you're across the pond so you get a pass lol

my experience with frying the maf(s!) mirrors johnspeedtechs in the thread you reference e.g.

i USED to fry the maf EVERY time i would peg the limiter and this happens since my rev limiter was raised to 7200k with my tune. so thinking i was clever, i kept replacing them with the 50$ knockoffs that come from taiwain instead of the NEW bosch 124.00 part. they would work just fine until i hit that dreaded limiter ... again :roll eyes:

so, what i have found more recently ( 2 yrs? ) is that although i have hit the rev limiter again since i replaced it with a NEW bosch maf, the "frying of the maf diode" syndrome seems to have been eliminated. though i still wince if i ever peg it for fear i've just blown another 225 US lol. at least i know how to change one myself, and i say that with no small degree of accomplishment :roll eyes:

i'm not sure what my point is? though i much prefer edwin stars version of his song, but i empathize and share in your maf woes and if i may? "good god y'all, what is it good for? absolutely nothin', say it again Hwooah"

so stay away from pegging it! my best advice!

If you are blowing MAF at a rev limiter rate, maybe look at Hitachi MAF for the price of 3 Bosch and don't ever look back again.

I know I will get flamed but yes hitting rev limiter is asking for trouble and not necessary. And yes I have done it many times when younger and even dumber then I am now lol.

i've hit the limiter many times, and never once was it intentional. that 7200 sneaks up real quick

I did a car swap with a local guy, his 12C for my 996 TTS on Sat morning, he increased stage 1 revs by 4000 and stage 2 by 400, so double what they were before, my rev limiter is set at 7000 and I have hit it only twice... I usually shift at about 6300-6500 if going WOT. He also topped it up at a gas station with 5 gallons E85 instead of 93 octane, so I also spent Sun - Mon draining my tank and refilling with 93, we actaully though that was the problem until the P0102 code and ABS/PASM failure showed. Moral, I am only letting trusted Porsche guys drive my Porsche and once I get this new MAF in, will drive it to Tims and get his mafless Eurodyne tune

BTW those effing 20 or T25 security torx things are redonkulous, then the clip was jammed as well, took me an hour to pry it free, effing awful design by Porsche
