Interesting Article on the 996TT

True Slant Noses are worth more now than non or kitted versions.
I honestly don't think ours will be appreciating anytime soon unless Porsche does something drastic on its newer ones like they did when they went from 993 to 996 and people don't like it.
I bought my 996tt because it was actually the best bang for the buck and the prestige... I don't have any problems with the lights and those that do, usually can't keep up to see them anyways...

^ ain't that the truth. but if a spankin new r-type jag coupe can't get away from us? and modded we give any stock 997t's or dare i say it, the 991t? a run for their 150k?.. i think that's what they mean when they say bang for the buck.

We can look at it this way, the slant noise was the one and only 911. The 996 head lights is also one and only.
Because in its 51 years of production, and the millions of cars it ever produced, we have something that is truly revolutionary, unique, first and last of its kind. Only a fraction of numbers compare to all of the rounded headlights.
There, you should feel better with that thought, appreciate or not.

I just got into a 996TT after having a 997 C4S years ago but had to get rid of the toy when I decided to go back to fellowship training. I was thinking of getting back into the 997, but after hearing of the IMS issues on the 997.1 I decided to entertain the idea of the 996TT.
My personal taste (as well as the "majority" of most Porsche enthusiasts) does not like the visual features of the 996s (interior and exterior). I believe it is the least attractive of the water-cooled 911s and is considered the ugly stepchild of the 911, however I have to admit that "bang for the buck" you can't go wrong with the 996TT. It definitely brings a smile to my face every time the Mezger GT1 motor spools up.

The Boxsters had been out for about 3 years and I really liked them too. The 993 compared to a 986 looked like an antique. The interior was closer to a '70s car than something in the '90s. The headlights on the Boxster and the new 996 were modern and just like the GT1 racer, very cool in every way.
FF, I abandoned the 993 because I didn't want "old and moldy". I ordered a brand new Boxster with a $63K price tag. It would be in several months from now. For those of you that recall, in '98,'99 and '00 new Porsche's were sold out for months or years in advance. Used cars were very scarce as well as dealers had lists of customers that would buy any nice example for a lot of money.
While waiting for the Boxster, I had a change of heart and really wanted a 996. I could wait until I found the right car. In the mean time my wife had sold her Corvette and found a near new Boxster with <8k miles and a Tip trans that she fell in love with. She bought it, still has it!
A year and a half later I found a mint 996 Cab, a late '99 with the cool GT1 headlights! I had that car for 7 years and loved it. It still looks great, saw it a couple of months ago, know the owner.

I definitely *prefer* the look of classic/round Porsche headlights, but that doesn't mean I don't like the 996 Turbo headlights - I do. I think many people (especially Porsche purists) jump on the bandwagon of "hate anything different" before they can form their own opinion. Clearly, most of us haven't fallen in that category given that we're on this forum! As for the interior, I'm not too crazy about it (too "bubbly" for my taste); but, it's a non-issue given I have the damn car, lol.

Much as I'd like this to be the case, I really doubt it.
Too many cars built, too many still around.
OTOH, I think all of the depreciation has been taken and prices will only fluctuate a little from where they are now.
As for the lights, I like them. Always have. I don't get the hate at all. Same with the interior. Yes, it's a bit basic, and without the full leather a bit plasticy, but very functional and light years ahead of 993 and earlier 911's.
Still unbelievable value for money. A nicely optioned year old 3-Series BMW costs about the same!

In ten years time, we will look back with fondness of the "analog cars" and the 996 will be there. No turbo 4's, no paddle shifting, no hybrids, no computerized wizbangery (outside of PSM, which you can disable) that makes driving the car like playing a video game.
That's when the 996 will gain steam, I think. When people are harkening back to manual transmissions and non-hybrids, the so called disadvantages of the 996 will fade away.
headlights? I think they look sharp and if they had put out the turbo look in the first place, not the fried egg look, had had they not been so close in appearance to the lowly boxster, we would remember them as being GT1 inspired and not "Boxster like" ... the look of the headlights doesn't make the car any less good to drive, after all.
interior? yes, the non-leather is cheap, but my car, at least, has a mix of black leather and carbon and I think it looks great. I don't what's so good about the 997 interior? I've been in one several times and don't think it's a huge step up, at least from what I have.

A 911 Turbo is a 911 Turbo, at the end of the day my 2003 gets way more attention and respect on the street than most other model year 2003 cars on the road. I have also driven a 991 and although quite luxurious and refined it just doesnt have the same raw driving excperience of the 996 and even 997. It will take a few more years but the 996 will become a saught after classic that will appreciate in value. I will never forget the first time I saw a 996 Turbo, I fell in love.

Some of these comments are pretty funny:
Used cars are gross. You and your followers here have the outlook of guys who drop out of college and want to pretend to be successful. Once you hit a certain income level you'll understand. A used car is literally not even something successful people think about.
Yea, because a successful person thinks it's a great idea to dump his money in a new car; the worst depreciating asset you can find?! I'm guessing he bought a new Kia Rio
