Interesting Article on the 996TT

I was never a Porsche 911 fan b/c I thought it was ugly especially the round bulgy eyes. I started to like the 996 b/c of the different looking lights, even found this forum, like everyone here. I liked the 996tt b/c the lights isn't as bad looking. But when the 997 came out, the 996 instantly looks like an old car and the lights started to look horrible. I had to asked myself, "What was I thinking?" The interior reminds me of an armor all commercial, all shiny and plasticky. Porsche's upgrades are drastic, my 981's interior, feel, technology is so much better than the 997. I drive my 981 four times a week and drive my 997 once a week. When I drive my 997 I feel like I went back a couple of decades. Similar to how the 993 feels compared to the 996, 996 to 997, and now 997 to the 991. The only thing I wished is that it needs to stop getting bigger. My 981 looks bigger than my 997 in my garage.

I like the old style better maybe because of me being older lol= but seriously I didn't care for 997 the moment I drove it, especially the interior! I agree the 996tt interior is dated but that's what gives it character and the driving interaction is fantastic. The bottom line is its ridiculous to debate the appearance as everyone has an opinion and most would drive a cardboard box with wheels if it cost more and was the new big thing. Ignore the naysayers and quietly enjoy one of the best driver cars ever made.

In ten years time, we will look back with fondness of the "analog cars" and the 996 will be there. No turbo 4's, no paddle shifting, no hybrids, no computerized wizbangery (outside of PSM, which you can disable) that makes driving the car like playing a video game.
That's when the 996 will gain steam, I think. When people are harkening back to manual transmissions and non-hybrids, the so called disadvantages of the 996 will fade away.
headlights? I think they look sharp and if they had put out the turbo look in the first place, not the fried egg look, had had they not been so close in appearance to the lowly boxster, we would remember them as being GT1 inspired and not "Boxster like" ... the look of the headlights doesn't make the car any less good to drive, after all.
interior? yes, the non-leather is cheap, but my car, at least, has a mix of black leather and carbon and I think it looks great. I don't what's so good about the 997 interior? I've been in one several times and don't think it's a huge step up, at least from what I have.

From an ECU standpoint, the 996TT is much more similar to the 993TT than the 997TT. With the quirk of the headlights, and its analog nature our platform could have some potential down the road. Look at the 964s now!
Even if the 996 is not for everyone, a rising tide raises all ships

being at 121400 mi i don't see much more than fun in terms of "value". the hit i've taken on the car is enormous, while the joy can't be bought

Some of these comments are pretty funny:
Used cars are gross. You and your followers here have the outlook of guys who drop out of college and want to pretend to be successful. Once you hit a certain income level you'll understand. A used car is literally not even something successful people think about.
Yea, because a successful person thinks it's a great idea to dump his money in a new car; the worst depreciating asset you can find?! I'm guessing he bought a new Kia Rio

Funny how the headlight discussion always seems to come up during discussions around value.
Like I've said before, never mind inspite of, I bought a 996TT because of the headlights. My desire to have this car has value to ME. I honestly don't drive it for anyone but myself, so others' opinions on them are meaningless to me. If (big if) and when the day comes that I ever sell it, it will have paid for itself in smiles already so whatever money I get for it will be gravy.
That said though, I'm glad for the ownership in general that values seem to be stable or rising.

The interior does look its age but I think its aging well. I dont like te 997 interior. its just not right.
Also love the mk2 996 lights.
Overall I think the 996tt is a sleeker and more appealing looking car. Constantly get asked by (non car folks) if thats the new model. You dont get that with a 997.
The 997 is still a cracking car but overall its looks just arent there to me. Its to fragmented and looks like a civic with a body kit(in a 911 version kind of way. its ricey).
its not aging as well imho
its like once you see it...you SEE it.

I honestly don't care much if the value goes up or down. That said, all the turbo models only drop so much in value and i think the 996TT is pretty much at the bottom. Mine is still worth what I paid for it 2.5 years ago! Clean examples are becoming harder to find as well.
As far as lights go, don't like the regular 996 but do love the turbo.
