Failed Illinois NEW Emission Testing
#16
This is why its important to open up the thresholds of when the code is thrown , as opposed to "hard code" readiness. We run into issues with a batch of tunes from 2-3 years ago that the threshold for cat readiness was not set wide enough for certain cats.... However this is exactly why we opted not to just "tune things off". Most states are going down the same path as IL where the "not supported" result just wont fly anymore.
Its an easy fix. Im sure you'll get it sorted out quickly.

At least here, it's been a obd2 computer check for years, and any o2 sensors "turned off" or forced into a constant "not ready" status was an instant fail. And we're tested on it every year for cars that drive over 5k miles per year.

swapping tunes takes a minute.. not a big deal... you will pass...

In the state of WA they allow you to take your car to a shop, certified by the state, and "attempt" to make the needed repairs. You have to spend a minimum amount, think its $200. Then you bring the receipt in showing you "attempted" to fix your car and they will give you the new registration. I had to do this with my M5 after mods and tune. There are a couple of approved shops that will help you out with the "attempt" I would get some preventative maintenance done and bring them the receipt and be done. Check your states laws and see if there is a similar loop hole.
If modified you must return it to stock no matter the cost. Again, AFAIK
Edit: Washington State requires that you pass a VISUAL INSPECTION. Any mods that dont pass visual you cannot get a waiver. Unless you have a friendly shop of course.

also have an OBD2 plug-in test here in Ontario, CAN. for any car 1998and newer...idle sniffer for 1997 and older.
No problem here, Tony/EPL has my emission-monitors on and passes as it should
It's a stupid test but nobody should have an issue with the basic emission equipment still on the car and a quality tune.

HI guys,,,Well I had to take my annual 2 yr emissions test to get my plates renewed ,,
I failed ,,
Never failed before >> Reason was they switched to a stricter test procedure now.. Which detected,,,
Reason was Non Supportive Monitors,,,never detected that on prior tests..
I do have large 100 cell HJS cats and all the O2 sensors BUT the tune was made to make it like non cats...Lucky I wasn't catless now..
I guess this type of test is spreading,,that really stinks..
Todd at ProtoMotive said he can send me a new tune that should work with my still hooked up emissions equipment..Then off to Markski .
Getting tougher all over now..

Your best bet is to register your car outside of Cook county if you're in Chicago, Will, Lake, (pretty much the counties that border the lake) where they don't do emissions. My buddy registered his built 6.0 iron block LS motor that was straighpiped in Morris (Grundy county) and never had a problem.

^ sorry but i think any advice to reg out of state/county to facilitate deliberate non compliance is lousy advice. i mean i'd like to run catless as much as the next guy, and i also not for nothin' believe there are ulterior reasons beyond all this nanny state sh*t, but that notwithstanding i sure wouldn't give advice to attempt to circumvent the "system". i mean anyone can put a stocker on the car for a test, then go home and go catless but do you really want to explain that stuff in a vehicle inspection? i don't. i must be showing my age, but my car is fast as living hell and passes smog no problem,.. and whatever causes me any grief from john law? just ain't worth "it". least in my book lol

We've had that test type here for a long time. All the readiness monitors have to be ready status. Not supported means it's turned off in the computer. Flash it properly with monitors working and you'll pass no problems.

Right, just a 2 min flashing process... simple...

Does anyone know if the VR Tuned ecu program turns off the O2 sensors or truly Raises O2 Limits as they say when ordering the tune?
If they disable it, id have to put the stock file back on before going to emissions im assuming?
Thanks

its best to put the oem tune back in ... that simple...
