Filters mounted directly on turbo

Curious to see who currently runs or in the past has run with filters mounted directly to the turbos?

What are the different schools of thought on this? The obvious being a concern of hydrolocking, which a few people have used hyrdaphobic filter socks to prevent

I drive my car year-round in this rainy seattle weather with my fender intakes.

Mine draw air from behind the intercooler shroud. Basically the bracket for the intercooler fits over the cone part of the filter. This all stays behind the fender lining, and stays nicely dry.

Plus, they can't be sucking water, because I'm not boosting in the rain! I don't have a deathwish!

Trying to picture this - is your filter on top of the IC sealed in the duct or outside of the duct but behind the fender liner? Any pics? It seems a bunch of us are struggling with this concern!

I just responded to the other thread. Both taboo and I have the same setup.

I think that I owe everyone so pictures of what we did. It's the only way to show it properly.

Let me rip the wheel of and get some photos of the next few days.

In the mean time, heres a ****ty iphone photo from the last time the bumper/intercoolers were off.

As you can see. The intake bends around up behind the intecooler. It fits behind the air channel/tube. There is a space back behind the tunnel from the openings in the body to the intercooler.

Ah that's very helpful! Thank you, I know that's not a high airflow area but it's out of the weather. Any issues with tire clearance?

So, you would have to go Mafless to go this route though - right?

I dont know whats involved going from MAF to MAP for this, I cant imagine its very easy, but I'm starting to think it might make more sense long term than upgrading the piping.

MAFless aka SpeedDensity or blow-thru. I'm not sure who tunes either of those on a stock ECU but I *think* ProtoMotive does MAFless and BBI might do blow-thru since they and IPD apparently designed a Y-pipe together that puts the MAF sensor at the throttle body. I've been in a car that I think was done by Proto and it drove damned nice. Oh! Maestro can also tune MAFless, Tim in New York is doing that on his street car and others may too.

I'm going standalone for my car.

I agree that doing this vs upgrading the feet of piping makes sense. Any length of pipe is going to have restriction and the path those pipes take is both long and tortured. Upgrading them may require dropping the engine and certainly wouldn't be a cakewalk in the car. You also have to worry about running out of MAF resolution at some point but I think there are fixes for that too.

just to run a fast number sure go a ahead but to run a filter on the compressor all the time is mad... been there done that 8 years ago... unless your sponsored by a turbo company I suggest one does not even try... many of the Saudi Arabian/ Kuwait guys do it and they blow turbos left and right...
If you do the duck work right and have a proper IC with shields on sides and the black plastic cover is cut right it works great.. this is how I run it and it did run a mid 9 sec run... Even with a big BMC filter and a 6" IC... but one has to do it right( in pic the black plastic is not on and thats important to have ti cut right..... mafless of blow thru only...

Its full 3" piping, so yes. The tires rub very very lightly on hard cornering. Its less of a problem with r888's, as they don't really flex like a PS2 does...

The airflow back there is actually pretty decent. I get FAR less compressor surge (slipping/fluttering of the turbo compressor from air-flow restriction) than running the oem airbox.

I run the filter on the turbo. Just keep an eye on it and clean them somewhat often. I will eventually be going to the filter on top of the intercooler myself.

I recently picked up a set of Alpha 3076 and am planning on going mafless with filters on the turbos - Car lives in SD, never sees rain and only comes out to play on dry roads a couple times a month.

Questions for those who have run filter off the turbos - Which size / shape filter are you running? // Which filter sock are you using? // What filter size to fit on compressor housing of 3076?
