Radiators
#2
radiators are one of those "just can't tell" items on this car. you sure wouldn't think one could go bad at 30k!? but there ya go. it can't help that bugs and who knows what all else get stuck in them and become petrified. so pinhole leaks are possible at any time. that's why i've screened in my cowls.

for longevity and i suppose future preventative maintenance, i likely will look for ones with alum. end tanks.
thanks for the heads up though- i'll take a look at AKG to see if i can warrant the price difference.

not uncommon for a failure(s) at that age...get the CSF's and be done.

On a road trip back to the mid-west in my 03 Turbo and had to have all 3 radiators replaced.
I'm sure the coolant didn't freeze.
My guess is the extreme cold (temps even during the day in the single digits) with the subsequent contraction followed by running the engine and subjecting them to the expansion that comes from heating the radiators up to over 200F doomed all 3.
They were leaking from where the tank joins the core.
Had the radiators replaced at a dealer so I opted for factory radiators. Expensive. Nearly $700 each for the two corner radiators and I forget how much for the center. Porsche charges a 20% surcharge to ship overnight. Had I elected to get them shipped but some cheaper way I would still be there and spending my "savings" on a hotel room.
My tech sources in CA tell me radiator failure is rare. My Turbo had 130K miles on when the radiators failed. I suspect had I not subjected the car to the extreme cold the radiators would be good yet. The SA at the mid-west Porsche dealer said it is common for Porsche radiators to fail at around 100K to 125K miles.
I note my 02 Boxster with over 288K miles on it and one radiator original (and the other with probably 200K miles on it) has not suffered a radiator failure.
