Coolant drain : need some pointers (with pics)

Hi all,

I am in the process of a big 30K maintenance and as part of the preventative aspect of this also just replaced my water pump (the original one turned out to be unaffected though).
I now want to replace all my coolant with new G12 and so far have drained the engine (2 drain plugs in the rear).

Reading up on the forum, I know I also have to drain up front at the radiators and at some location close to the transmission.

Can somebody please chime in and confirm (or correct) my current thinking ?

1] I only see a drain plug on the center radiator (see attached picture). Is it sufficient to drain from this one location, or should I also unhook the side radiator hoses ?

2] See other picture showing the location of where I think the 2 lines close to the transmission need to be drained. Is this the correct location ?

3] I came across some references indicating to also drain the heat core, however those seemed to be geared toward the NA 996. Anybody know whether this also applies to our GT1 engines ?

Thank you in advance !

Yves

mfbmike is infamous around these parts
There is a thread somewhere that shows how to drain the engine, radiator, etc. of all of the coolant. I can't remember what it was titled but I'm sure someone will post it in here.

Perhaps while your in there replace the coolant tank as well. Are you doing the work yourself?

The coolant tank is a B!tch to remove with the motor in and not dropped or lowered.

Yes, I'm doing all the work myself, its kinda fun.
I have not considered replacing the coolant tank, is it really necessary ?
I did replace the fuel filter and the water pump last weekend which was a breeze with the engine lowered.

Coming back to my original question : are those the correct points to drain the coolant ? I searched everywhere on-line, went through the shop manual...nothing. Not even a diagram of the cooling system, very frustrating.

Shop manual page 520 is specific about draining the system. The engine lowest point to drain is from the elbows (see pic) There are little thin washers to seal them. Never done the job so I cannot comment about drain location. Applying air to the hoses you had disconnected near the transmission and you will get rid of the old coolant from the radiators and hoses. Also removing one hoses connected to the lowest point of the radiator can also be a good procedure.
