The goal is for both people to going very similar speed before the green light (say 60mph).
What the RX7 was trying to do (which I hear BHT is very good at doing as well ) was to go slower than target speed (say 40mph), then before hitting the speed zone where the green light is triggered ramp up speed to have the momentum. Even though both cars may be going similar speed by the time the go light is triggered, the car that started at the slower speed could essentially start out 2-3 cars ahead almost right out of the gate.
This can have a pretty large effect on the outcome.
