Transmission/Oil Leak of some sort...

Hello all - I'm new to the forum and recently purchased a 996tt that I bought from a member here. I drove it home to San Diego from Jackson, MS without event - it was a great drive.

Upon arrival, after the first night back, I noticed a relatively large pool of oil below the car that seems to be accumulating and dripping from the passenger side rear axle where it meets the transmission. Any ideas as to what this could be? The oil doesn't appear to be thick tranny fluid and smells similar to engine oil. However, the engine oil level appears to be holding constant. Any input is useful - pics attached.

yea, that was one of the first things I checked - it was fine. if it was that, where, given the leak location, do you think it would be leaking from?

The P/S system boosts the clutch. There's a metal line that runs between the pump and the slave cylinder. On my car that line had a fitting fail at the pump way up in the bowels of the car, it required pulling an axle on the driver's side to replace. It made a pretty big mess and coated the entire rear of the car....

if it turns out to be the axle seal. drain the diff. the trans and differential share the same fluid. once the diff is drained remove the 6 axle allen bolts. need 6 new they are one time use. drop the axle down and let it hang. theres a bolt in the center of the stub axle. remove it. the outer case has a circle of bolts. remove them and remove the outer housing. theres a rubber ring on the outside edge and a seal on the inside

yea so it ended up being the diff seals at $27/ea, replaced both and got a post-purchase inspection at the same time from a local indy mechanic - pretty stoked overall.

now, time to beat on her.
