Difference between Turbo and GT2 trans?

Well, it looks like the shop that's working on my tramsmission will need to replace the whole thing due to a catastrophic failure caused by mistakes made during reassembly during earlier repairs. The shop owner said he could get a new GT2 trans but it would need modifications to install in a Turbo, or source another turbo trans from Germany and drop it right in after transferring my Wavetrac to it.
My question is, since my car is no longer AWD, what other difference are there that would prevent the simple drop in of a GT2 transmission? Should I avoid GT2 transmission which would take less time to source for some reason? He made it sound like a difficult swap but I always thought they were very similar other than the output shaft on the front of the turbo trans.

for RWD only, no modification to install a GT2 trans, outside of clutch hydraulics to run GT2 slave...
3-5 steel synchros, LSD, unweighed shift selector levers, trans oil pump/cooler...
for price reasons, I'd probably get an OK 6TT trans and build it...

This is being covered by the shop's insurance, so price won't be an issue. He's providing a brand new trans, not a used one. If I go with GT2 it sounds like it will cost a little extra for the clutch actuation mechanism; I forgot about that.

If the shop/insurance will cover it, install a 997GT2RS trans and consider yourself lucky
Clutch master, slave, PS pump

I hope you get the trans you want but Id be surprised if insurance company pays for new trans much less upgrade= used yes. I'm on your side and not trying to be argumentative but insurance companies are usually tight.

The gearing is lousy on the 996 boxes. Get the 7gt2rs box and have them swap out the factory LSD clutches with guard clutch packs and a 50-60lb preload. The oem clutches are very weak and wear out in a few track days. You're lucky if someone's shop insurance is picking up the tab

I installed the 997gt2 trans which is a much better upgrade. Comes with an led which you could sell, the better gears and ratios plus the oil cooling and spray bars.

You can modify the front to take the output shaft so it can be awd again, but I would negotiate with the owner and say instead of doing that let me keep the lsd which you can sell.

I completely agree with you based on the terrible experiences I've had with previous shops. I was surprised when the owner said he would cover a new trans but I think he feels terrible about the mistake and the months of time I've lost with my car. He genuinely wants to make things right.
Regarding the recommendation to go the a 997GT2RS gearbox, e will be eating some of the cost even with insurance paying, so a 7GT2RS trans is not likely. He knew of a new 6GT2 trans in North America that he could get through a dealer.

I'd love to have the RS trans but that is not going to happen

6GT2 transaxle is still a great upgrade, better LSD than 997 but gearing/3rd gear less optimal than 997
