Dumb question about tuning.

I have a 2005 Turbo S. I am considering a Softronics tune which they claim on their website to increase my HP and torque respectively to 520 and 555.

If it is so easy to increase these numbers with software, why did Porsche not do this originally to win the HP wars with their competitors?

Or am I missing something with their claims?

yes, only a tune give amazing power gain, you will not believe the difference.

i suggest UMW tune, contact kevin here:

http://www.ultimatemotorwerks.com/contact.html

or markski tuning: https://markskituning.com/

they are good tuner, dont pick a canned tune for your can, get in contact with a good tuner and get his software

i personnaly have umw tune and i'm very happy,

john, to answer your question, the answer is more about efficiency from the factory. they conservatively tune for emissions and the SAFEST possible scenario. opening the computers up a bit (i.e. timing, boost, etc) can be done specific to YOUR scenario.

i know this is a generic response, but the gist of the factory tune is to be as clean and safe as possible.

I'd also suggest working with one of the tuners here rather than getting something with no fine tuning. Learn to do a boost leak test too.

Efficiency, warranty, marketing, fuel consumption, emissions, etc. all come into play for the factory tune. The aftermarket doesn't have these restrictions, or are weighed differently. And a good tune can be excellent for the life of the car.

softronics is a delivery tool . who's the actual tuner? its always a good thing to have actual contact with the person doing the tuning.

fyi every tune is a "canned" tune unless your specific car was road or dyno tuned .This can be accomplished either live on a dyno or road or by data logging and sending to tuner for them to tune for your particular application.

Kevin at UMW gets my vote. I've been working with him since 2008. Just realize that an eco tune will probably warrant a new clutch shortly thereafter. Within 1000 miles I had to put one as you are putting down a lot more HP.

I see various ecus come thru my hands with tunes some paid $2500 for and only 11 changes made, 4 of which are rpm limiters and max speed... sad but true.. others use online tuning services and sell basic programs for 100 euro... then resold for who knows what...
go with one who guarantees his product and you get full refund if not happy... thats how confident I am..
good luck...
markski

There are plenty of reputable tuners to choose from here. You can do really great with this car just upgrading just exhaust and tune. And that's very safe also. You will notice big gains on pretty much every European turbocharged car out there. The factory leaves a lot of room and sometimes over the years they keep adding a little bit themselves to keep things fresh.

I had Markski tune my car when I purchased several upgrades. His tune was spot on. Car runs great. You won't find a better, more knowledgeable person to do the job.

Hey John,
Welcome to the wonderful world of a Turbo car.

The OEM (Porsche in this case) do many things for many reasons. At the timewhen the 996 Turbo came out it was plenty fast compared to the direct competition.

Here is another example. Jaguar has the XF, the XFR and the XFRS. The motorsand superchargers in all 3 cars are identical yet the XF makes 470hp, the XFR 510hp and the XFRS 550hp. This is done solely through the tune. An aftermarket company can go in and safely get all of these cars to about 600hp just with atune and maybe a pulley. All that to say every manufacturer leaves room forvarious reasons.

With regards to Softronic. The claims are almost too good to be true but the reality is they are very true.

I cant tell you how happy I was with my Softronic 1bar tune. Basically just a tune and one step colder spark plugs woke the car up so much it was amazing. Its not like you will say to yourself "Ya I think it feels faster"...you will have a huge smile and feel the extra power for sure.

I then decided to go with upgraded turbos and Softronic tuned the car with the 70lbs injectors with ease. The car drove like it was stock. Driveability to me is VERY important.

Then when I had issues with my car (nothing related to the tune) Scott from softronic stood by me every step of the way with help and suggestions. Issues were fixed and the car ran flawless ever since!

I wouldn’t hesitate one second to call Softronic. You won’t be sorry. Good luck and have fun!!
