metal piece on caliper almost touching rotor.

guys, got my wheels balanced on my, to me new car (seal gray 03 tt, 10k miles). while the wheels were off i gave the car a little inspection to see how thick the brake pads are, and noticed they were ok...probably need new ones in a few months...but for now they are good.

i did notice too that on the passenger/front side their is a round metal piece that sticks out of the caliper/next to pad, pointing towards the rotor. basically parallel to the pad, and sits abit higher than the pad. 3 corners have maybe 2mm-3mm of clearance between this peice of metal and the rotor.
what concerns me is that the metal piece on the front/passenger side is soo close to touching the rotor.

what is this round piece of metal?
i feel like if i loose 1mm of pad thickness the metal off the caliper will hit the rotor and ruin it..

any insight here???
