Clunk noise when releasing brake pedal after sitting

Can't figure this one out...

Come to a complete stop, sit for 2 seconds or 2 minutes, foot on brake pedal the whole time, as soon as released, hear a slight clunk noise in front end.

Can also here the noise when braking and letting off pedal at cruising speeds. Noise is only when brake pedal released.

Front sway bar had some play, so replaced droplinks, that didn't solve it.

Any ideas?

What brake pad and compound? Is it possible the pads don't retract and stick? Audible from outside the car?

Is it more a drive line clunk? If you have access, I would put the car on 4 jack stands, put the car in gear and have some one listen. See if you can replicate the sound. Or maybe just jack up the front end and have someone manually rotate the tires (car not running ;-)) while pressing / releasing the brake to see if it's sticking. You can also check ball joints for play.

Could not replicate up on jackstands by rotating by hand or in gear.

Can you replicate it every time? Do you keep it in gear, clutch depressed, foot on brake. Does the car roll at this point of noise or stationary until you release the clutch. Maybe find an area, have someone stand next to the car as you come to a stop and replicate what causes the noise. See if they hear it from a better angle? If you can replicate it often, try coasting to a stop slowly using the hand brake (instead of brake pedal) to slow down / hold you at the stop and release and take off. Maybe have a sticking front brake pad / caliper. Could be front end bushing, drive line bushing (Guibo). Sorry, hard to say, just giving you some ideas to try and narrow it down better..

Can replicate every time. Didn't think of using ebrake to isolate if front pads or not.. Thanks for the tip, I'll give that a shot!

Ebrake activates pads in the drum of the rear rotor doesn't it? Not the normal pads?

When standing outside the car, you can see the front driverside wheel jog front to back when tapping the brakes, very obvious when rolling down a hill. Does not have same play on passenger side.

What would allow the wheel to have play in it like this?

Also, as these cars get older and older check other stuff in the front suspension. Ball joints, tie rods, upper strut mounts (see that you have JIC's so maybe not applied) Also a common issue with the front are wheel bearings. They go bad on these.

PS - where in NY are you? A few of us went on a run up to 7 lakes Drive today.

Had a similar experience recently, I had quite a bit of dragging of pads on both front rotors. It was to the point that I could feel pad pressure when rolling to a stop and it would hold on a moderate incline. I would hear a knock when accelerating from a stop as the pads released and a harder knock when first leaving in the morning. It is likely that the pistons were being pinched and not retracting. Replaced seals and dust boots and all is good now.

I would check the motor-mounts and the trans-mount. Have a look at the front brake calipers, check the bolts and the pads, if they are fixed correctly.
