Worth the change to a bigger wheel size?

Hi people,
I am thinking about ordering some bigger rims in gt2 size. I run oz's in standard turbo size (8x18 and 11x18). I hope to gain a little more speed on the track with the 8,5x18 and12x18 gt2 combo.
I dont knoe yet which rims, stay with the oz alleggeritas or going big with bbs e88 , which means i gonna sell my soul to the devil.

My question is, does the bigger wheelbase help at all? Or just cosmetics?

I was facing a similar dilemma. This thread has some valuable opinions in it.

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...19-wheels.html

I'm sticking to 18's. On CCW C14's currently. Super light weight. Couldnt believe it when i first picked them up.

Edit- realized you were talking about widths ! still a helpful thread regardless.

A tire compound upgrade or pro driver training will gain you more speed than slightly wider wheels (especially if you're not adding wider rubber).

Later, Steve

I will keep the awd thats why i want the GT2 combo 235/40 and 315/30. Bigger rubber no bigger rims. 18`` is the way to go.
Actually i want to order a BBS E88 wheelset in 18` and i dont know if i should pick the turbo size or upgrade to the gt2 size above. I am wondering if there is a big difference between these two sizes.

In a perfect world something like 9x18" and 12x18" would be best for stock fenders & suspension in track day use. The wider rims, the better.

But, please have a look at what tires you can be running. The best street legal track day tires in Europe with 18" size are available only at 295/30, not any wider anymore. This applies to Pilot Cup 2, Trofeo R, Dunlop DZ03G, Yoko 048R etc. Wider 18" are available from Toyo (I don't like) or Nitto (not available in EU). That's why I would just stick with 11" in rear when if using 18".

For the front, updating the 8" rim to a wider 8.5" or 9" wheel is not a huge upgrade but a small one...(assuming you continue using the same 235 tire).

Perhaps best just keep the current setup and install 235/295 for them. If you are very serious about performance or want better looks with the lovely E88, then wider rims would be something.

You don't need wider rims to fit 235/315 tires, they will fit on stock size rims just fine. I ran 235/315 for years on stock sized rims. I just went back to 295 rear because finding 315's is usually problematic.

911mhawk is infamous around these parts
If awd run 245/40 and 315/30 , it works great.
I have a set of OZ in GT2 size/offset for sale on RL in anthracite.

FWIW, Iwent to a 9/12x18 set of Finspeeds.

I tried a 19" wheel and it just didn't look/feel right on the car.

I ended up putting a set of 3 pc Kinesis Motorsport K59's in 18x9 and 18x12 with 235/40 & 315/30 Pzeros...the traction upgrade has been VERY noticeable on the stock AWD system.

I agree that compound always trumps size. You will notice a huge amount of difference between a regular 'summer tire' and a 200 or 100 compound tire.

On the track i used PS Cup1`s in turbo sizes. Great tire. U cant compare with a street tire of course.
I found out, that there arent that much Cup tires or even street tires out there in 315/30 18.
Thats kinda poor...

I'm running an interesting set up on my stock twists on the track and I'm impressed by the results. 888s in 255 front and 295 rear. I was a bit skeptical at first but the car grabs in the front and still sticks in the rear. It made the rear a little bit lighter which give the car a very predictable feel. I've been instructing at the track for almost 20 years now and I've been playing with different tire sizes with this car for the past four years. When my tire guy suggested the set up I was very skeptical. He did warn me that the rear of the car would get lighter but I have not experienced any issues and I've been in 911s for years so I'm used to that feeling.

you still got awd? I dont dare to run 235/40 R 18 and 295/30 R 18 cause of the front diff. maybe the tire size difference is too big

I went 19s and now I'm back to 18s. Some 19s look really good, but I really prefer 18s. Now I'm on GT2 sized R888.

What Steve Jarvis said. Changing wheel size without changing tire size isn't going to make you faster. Quickest ways to get faster are tire compound, coaching, suspension upgrades (assuming you don't have much) and shedding weight. Not necessarily in that order.

You guys can't get Toyo RR's or BFG R1's over there?
