I have been looking at the interior of the 997 lately and I must say that I like the interior of the 996 MUCH better!!
I think it has better lines as well as a smoother finish and all in all says Porsche all over it..
Not all will agree, but IMO, the lines of the 996 interior are much more sporty than the 997..
Not only sporty, but much more classical..

You are right Shaggy. The 997 is to harsh and pointy IMO. I think the 996 is much more classy and says Porsche all over it!!
I love the classic lines that show in the interior of the 996.

Its funny, we say the same thing about the 993..

The dash vinyl is smooth on 997 instead of the grain pattern on 996. I think smooth vinyl is more leather-like and better.

As for shape, I think 997 dash looks more integrated and flow better. 996 dash is easier to take apart. I like the ergonomics of 996 better but have to say the 997 interior is superior as it is growing on me.

No regrets in getting a 02 myself. If the prices were the same, I'd get a used 997 primarily to get DVD Nav.

Sorry but I must argue that the 997 looks more "classic" than the 996. If you look at the 993 and previous dashboards you will see that there is almost a rib, handle, shelf to the dashboard extending from the instrument hump to the passenger side of the car. The 996 has a completely rounded dash whereas the 997 repeats this "shelf" area. That's the first thing I noticed about the 997. The central tunnel/HVAC/radio etc are all very different but the overall shape of the dash is very reminiscent of older 911s.

Like ours better too.....

The 997 has too many buttons, looks sterile, and those 3 shiny wedges on the steering wheel drive me nuts

the only thing i like better on the 996 interior is the three spoke steering wheel as in the carrera gt.

everything else is an upgrade.

I test drove a 996tt and a 997 c2s both on the same day and having never seen either before I was definately more impressed with the 996. Super sporty and classy at the same time. The 997 was kinda boring looking. and that chrono thing on the dash looked terrible IMO.

Funny, I was just having a discussion with a friend of mine about this very thing.

The angles bother the hell out of me... Well, that and the 50 buttons in the center console.

997S center console:

Actually, the interior on the doors bothers me more so than the center console. The center vents with their silver lining looks cheap to me. Matter of preference I guess...
