I would not risk damage with a open trailer. $500 is not alot of money to jump to an enclosed trailer.

I hope that was a joke about being broke and worried about spending $500, if not you should have never bought a Porsche.

Enclosed, Drive it, or if necessary open ship. Do not open ship with a car cover on it. The flapping of a cover will destroy the paint.

I flew fly-i.com (now defunct) and drove back. Cost me less than $500 (tix, gas, food) 7 hour drive back from NC to VA with plane tix with a friend. Had a blast on the drive!

Enclosed. I shipped a car once open trailer thinking it would be ok. The car came back to me not only damaged from vandalism (the car was even on the top level of a 6 car trailer and shipped by a professional company), but it had a layer of some kind of sealant on it that it must have picked up going under an overpass. I had to have the whole car wet sanded to get it off and then part of it repainted to fix the vandalism.
Don't take the risk. Even if insurance will cover it, you still have to deal with it

Winter weather can be brutal to an open cargo.
