Sport Auto has tested both cars to 0-200 kph in the past. Here are the results:
997S - 16.0 seconds

996 Turbo - 14.6 seconds

turbo times
Here's a C&D test of a tiptronic turbo cab (non S) that did 0-60 in 3.8 and 0-100 in 9.2. Not bad for a fat *** (3726 lbs) auto cabriolet. http://www.caranddriver.com/article....&page_number=1

I'm a bit confused over this... If they get these times with a "lowly" 997 then what do they get when they test the Murciélagos or Zondas? 2.5 to 60??
I'm not saying they lied or anything like that, I'm just very amazed by this time. But it seems that I ALWAYS see these crazy acc. times for any car when C&D tests. Anyone know why?

I read that article and they were astounded by the performance of the 997S so much so that they dyno'd it again to make sure it was not a sneaky attempt by Porsche to give a souped up car. It dyno'd around the same as expected. They did say the test car was broken in and ran faster...
The other tests of the 997S did not produce as good as that test however if you check other magazines. In fact the same mag. tested the 997S and it wasn't that fast initially.. and THAT fast the 2nd time (which is why they said maybe it opened up after being broken in).
In any case, I came away from the article thinking that it was a special scenario where everything was ideal. Real world comparisons (as proven in many 997S vs 996TT posts) are much different...
We've seen 997S get whooped by the regular C6... and the C6 is slower than the C5 Z06, which is about the same as 996TT.
All this benchracing aside, forget the numbers. The acceleration between the two is not *that* comparable.

I was astounded by that # as well. It was a good .3 to .5 sec. faster in the 1/4 mile than any other test run to date. We have seen the Carrera S run nose to nose with the C6 Z51 in most tests from 0-60 & 1/4 mile times, but after that the C6 pulls farther away. This is because of superior off the line traction (the Carrera S actually has better 0-60 times, but starts to fall back 80 on up). I think the Carrera S is a legitimate 12.6 (1/4 mile0 car but 12.3 must have been when all the planets were aligned.

I have no idea why people get so caught up on 0-60, 0-100 is becoming more and more important these days as on many of these high horsepower cars traction is the problem at launch.
Look at trap speeds and 0-100 times, not 0-60.

I know all of you with the TT's want to think your cars are so much faster, but I believe R&T. The TT will win in the straight 1 mile...but everywhere else it will be a good race.
You will all be disappointed when the 997 TT comes out to play. Technology improvements win the day.

I agree totally. I've said many times before that 0-60 is an essentially worthless measurement.

I wouldn't say a 996 turbo will wallop the 997S, they are a lot closer than turbo owners want to admit. Also, with the x51 package on the S there might not even be a gap at all.
