Durability of Tiptronic on modded TTs?
Greetings! I've been lurking on the board for the past couple of weeks trying to learn everything I can about the 996TT as I plan to pick one up within the next month.
At this point, I have not completely ruled out getting a Tiptronic if the right one comes along. My questions are:
1) Since my tentative plan is to get the car to Stage 4, would the tiptronic transmission be able to handle the extra output in power?
2) What kind of compromise in longevity, if any, should I expect to face?
3) Do any of the tuners' ECU reflash alter the shifting programming of the Tippy to take advantage of the change in powerband?

My 05 TT "S" is a Gaytronic with a PSI 520 ECU flash and could not be more pleased.
Sharkey will tell you to go for the TIP, no compromise in his eyes or in mine! The best of both worlds, Auto when you want and then shifting when you want.

My tip has had zero problem with the GT640. As for longevity, Sharky would know best as he has been running huge power with a tip longer than anyone I've heard. I have never noticed a change in shift points while going through the Evo stages.

My tip is only sighlty modded stage 2 and it has had absolutely no issues. I only have 12,000 miles on my car but it gets tested routinely. I have had some say stay at 550 or lower with the tip as the PSI 550 is supposed to be about a stage 4 anyway in acceleration. I agree about the PSI 520 kit. Just enough to roast but not enough to hurt anything. You should ride in a chipped auto. They are quick.

Personally, I find the combination of huge power and a stick to be somewhat challenging. Usually, to hold that much power, you tend to have a very stiff clutch. In addition, with a ton of torque, driving in the lower gears is not easy; you have to learn to modulate the power. However, I find the main advantage of driving a stick is that I feel much more involved. The tip can get kinda boring sometimes. When I'm not doing errands and just out driving, I always have more fun with my manual cars.
