New 4.5 Inch Intercooler Cores

First and foremost, many thanks to Markski for his assistance with my new intercoolers.

OEM 996TT intercooler cores are about 2 inches thick. GT2 intercooler cores are about 2.5 inches thick. Below are several photos of the new intercooler cores that I will be installing in my car shortly. These cores are 4.5 inches thick. The width and length are very similar to the OEM intercoolers. I am having end tanks and piping custom fabricated. These cores should cool the air considerably more than my current GT2 cores.

In contrast, the following is a photo of GT2 intercoolers:

Ur welcome Craig.
how do like them? these are bar & plate compared to stock OEM.... tube & fin
they r 8.8 inches wide and 14 inches long... and 4.5 inches thick.
a stock I/C is 14 inches long 8.5 inches wide but only 2.5 inches thick.

dgussin1 is infamous around these parts
Craig, just remember; having larger intercoolers means there is more cu. in. for the air to fill volumetrically, meaning that it will negatively effect spool time. That being said, bigger isn't always better but for your application, although I dont feel another 100 rpm's of lag is going to kill you since you're already waiting forever to spool. My intercooler is 10" X 4.5" x 24" (core size + end tanks) 1080 cubic inches; although I can still opt for the 12" X 4.5" X 27" (core size + end tanks) 1458 cubic inches.

Craig,

Just out of curiosity, did you get the larger intercoolers because of heat soak issues, because you need more cold air volume, or you simply want colder intake air? If it's not a volume issue, maybe liquid nitrogen sprayed on the intercoolers would have a greater effect on reducing intake temp than larger intercoolers. With larger intercoolers, you are still at the mercy of ambient air temps and the methanol mixture you are spraying now. Liquid nitrogen would give you some super cooled air. Does anybody out there even do liquid nitrogen spray? The bar and plate upgrade is cool though.

bar and plate is the way to go.... tube and fit is narrower then bar and plate.
If one looks at stock end tanks... I have many times.... the answer should be clear...
especially if ur running crazy HP like Craig.... the car is sufficating with such little end tanks.

All of the above. The GT2 intercoolers quickly heat soak, particularly with the boost I am running and power I am generating. Colder intake air is an invaluable component of power.

I previously considered a cyro bar and/or spray for the intercoolers, but declined because I do not want to be constanly filling and replacing tanks. As you noted, I am spraying methonal on the intercoolers instead (not as good, but considerably less of a hassle).

Craig,

I would have someone provide you with a working delta before I went through all the work of installing end tanks on those cores. The width you are showing and quoting is going against the physics of efficient air to air intercoolers.

Physics dictate that after a certain width (in conjunction with length and height) actually lose efficiency. From the information you have provided on these cores it appears they could spell trouble for you. If you want PM me and I will provide you with the name of the book and author which is source of my information.
