6 speed turbo transmission upgrade suggestions

My 996 turbo has 78k miles on it. I’m going to get the transmission refreshed. What are the items that you would do considering the car will never have more than 600 rwhp. Any gt3 cup upgrades?

6Cup shift lever
997GT2 1-3

If the car is used for track, I'd also install a 6Cup 3-4 shift fork and plumb the case for an oil cooler.

Remove the oil fill plug, push $10K worth of hundreds in. Seal it up and go for a drive.

Actually the trans refresh is the mother of all "while you are in there" costly projects.

Others can speak with more personal experience than I. For me the main thing other than wear items would be some form of LSD.

I have the Ruf short shift kit that will be installed. Any different from the cup shifter?

The Cup shift lever replaces the long counterweighted TT shift lever. The Cup shift lever is used on all the GT3/Cup gearboxes and negates the need for a short shifter. It's a $100 part installed on the gearbox when it's apart (it bolts on from the inside of the case). I would sell the RUF SSK. It's a poor bandaid designed to replicate the functionality of the 6Cup lever.

if you have a short shifter installed ie 997ss, does it work well with the internal cup shift lever? Or would you want to go back to a stock shifter with this change?

Hey Justin. You will want the standard length shifter on all the GT3 and Cup gearboxes. The "short throw" is effectively accomplished by the 30% shorter shift lever on the gearbox itself. I personally prefer the 996Cup shifter which is basically just a standard 996 shifter but with full metal bushings though out. This combo together is shift nirvana in my book. The throw is slightly longer than a stock 997GT3RS shifter which I feel is just a touch too short. You can see the shift action of the 6Cup shifter on a GT2 gearbox here in the attached video. If you have a TT gearbox and are going to have it out of the car at some point, I would absolutely 100% recommend installing the Cup shift lever. It will effectively give the TT gbox he shift "feel" of the GT/Cup box. You will additionally need the accompanying GT3 shift cable bracket (bolted to the exterior of the gearbox) but that's a cheap $50 part. I am also a big fan of the Alcantara 997GT3 shift **** over the 996 ***** but that's a personal preference.

Regarding shifters, I've used them all over the years, 996, 996SSK, 997, 997SSK, 997GT3, 997.2GT3, 996Cup, Numeric. The 996SSK was crap. The standard 996, 997, and 997SSK feel very "plasticky" (is that a word?) and a bit flimsy. The 997GT3 shifter is better, and 7.2GT3 shifter better still as it has more metal parts in it. The 996Cup feels the best to me and really has a solid / direct shift feel. I hated the Numeric, really notchy. 996Cup shift cables are fantastic and a must for any track application. I highly recommend those. Cheers...
