Battery on the fritz, what's Porsche's policy?

I've got a battery on the fritz on an 02 996TT, still under warranty with 7K miles on it. What's Porsche's policy re batteries? Will they replace it for free? Or will they give me some pro rata amount, which will probably result in me having to buy a $500 battery from the dealer.

Just want to know before I take it to the dealer. I'll just replace the damn thing myself if they're going to charge me $500...

Thanks in advance!

I've had mine replaced twice after not driving the car for 3 months. Generally, they are pretty good about batteries.

If you do have to replace yourself, check out Optima batteries...they are lighter, about 12 lbs.

I had mine go dead once. I usually drive it about every three weeks. I was told if it sits it will go dead. The solution, a battery saver. It plugs into your cigarette liter housing. The service writer at the dealership told me Porsche does not warranty the battery.

I wouldnt even mess with the dealer on that. I would get an optima battery and save the money and weight.

I agree totally, unless the dealer is willing to replace it for free. I'll ask them at the outset and tell them not to bother if it's going to cost me anything.

Is there anything more complex than usual to changing the 996TT battery? The electrical system seems way more complex than other cars I've owned. There's the sleep mode, that doesn't really seem very effective. There's the crazy way the alarm system acts if the battery is really low and you try to follow the instructions for gaining trunk access. The chipset seems to be ignored if the battery charge falls below a certain point, requiring that you re-engage a program (or else the car runs on much lower boost). And damn near everything is somehow monitored by a computer. I can only imagine what booby traps might lay in store for the unsuspecting shade tree mechanic that tries to change the battery...
