996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

Do radar detectors really help? If so, which is a great model?

I also have a V-1 and love it. I have had one ticket with it however. From a bridge I drove under, didnt see the cop and he got me after I passed underneath from above!

My question is do laser or radar "jammers" work?? I have a K-40 in my cayenne and when I drive by one of those on the side of the road "this is your speed" it always matches my speed. so if the K-40 has a "jammer" why is the detector speed accurate????

TIA

laser jammers work very well (i have the Escort ZR3). RADAR jammers, however, do not. not for vehicles, at least! the other laser jammers i've heard great things about are the Lidatek and the Blinder.

EDIT: didn't answer your question. the "this is your speed" signs still use radar, and therefore the K40 won't "jam" it. LIDAR/Laser, however, can be jammed using one of the jammers i mentioned earlier.

this is my current setup and i swear by it.

glad i could help the laser jammer (as well as the V1) really pays for itself as soon as it saves you once! btw, i bought both of my ZR3 kits from a seller on eBay for ~$300 each.

as for radar, i usually get ample warning using the V1...enough time to get on the brakes, at least. the only time it won't work is if the cop uses instant on or if there are NO other cars around to act as reflectors for the radar. for most other scenarios, the V1 + keeping a good lookout works very well.

Yeah, no defense for instant on...but sometimes you will get a split second chirp just before a full on "Instant On" buzz....

.

But to go back to the original question, yes they do work in many, maybe most situations.

But with the high quality of instant on radars and lasers, you need to quickly react to a radar signal that you receive from the short burst aimed at the car that is ahead of you. React then, if you receive it, as you mostly likely won't get a second chance.

If the "instant on" is aimed at you, and you didn't have a previous warning, your caught.

In my opinion, the time to drive a the speed limit and NOT count on your radar protector, is on low traffic roads when you are going down the highway or road by yourself.

When the cop points and pulls the trigger, it's over. He's got you. There's no way you can react fast enough, no matter which radar protector you have.

bingo. quite a predicament, though, as an empty highway is probably the scenario most of like to speed [safely] in

Bel has one very good model, i believe, which is the Bel 990 International. i think it covers certain bands (IN EUROPE) that the V1 previously did not cover. i believe that the V1 now has "euro mode" wihch covers these bases.

other than that, as far as i'm concerned, the V1 is still THE detector to have.

I had the Passport for awhile and liked it, but it suddenly died. I went with the V1 and love it. It has saved me several times and paid for itself easily. I haven't had a ticket in my TT 9 months running! I have it mounted on the windshield and plugged into the lighter. I can't say I love the setup. Would like something hardwired and hidden, but don't want to spend the cash

The key with using a radar detector is to use it as an additional sense organ. Whenever I'm driving, I'm constantly watching ahead (and to the side (and behind)), watching other cars, and listening for input from the radar detector (I have a Passport 8500, which is fine, but if I had do-overs, I'd go for the V1). My wife thinks I'm obsessed, but the only (legitimate) tickets I've had have been when I let my guard slip. At $300 a pop to get the fixed, I'm OK with that.

Besides, situational awareness is a good thing when you're driving, regardless of whether it saves you a ticket.

I see plenty of distracted minivan drivers with radar detectors on their dash pulled over with the flashing lights behind them.

Having a V1 really allows you to enjoy your car. I cant imagine not having it. I wouldnt own a tt without the V1.
