Fried clutch?

30K miles. I was driving fast yesterday in second at about 5,000 RPMs the acceleration slowed for a second and I let off. The "Check engine" light came on and is still on.

Today I floored it again in second and the same thing happened.

Any ideas??

Nothing to do with the clutch. Get a reading and see what the code is.

this could very well bue the early signs of a fried clutch.

I know...it happened to me!

At first, the engine kinda starts hesitating - and you get a CEL...maybe even a flashing CEL!!!
You take it in...read the code.
It MAY be a misfire..maybe not.
Either way, the dealer really doesnt know what to do.

As the clutch gets worse...it will start slipping.

NJow its easy to tell.

You floor it...wheels dont spin, but maybe your revs spike?

Its tough to tell...you cant really inspect the clutch easily (engine has to be dropped).

FWIW, I'm getting a new clutch to handle my newfound power, but this is EXACTLY how my clutch probs first surfaced.

Once again...the internet yields excellent (mis)information!!

Since this is "exactly" what happend to you, please tell us all what is the code that generated the CEL indicating your clutch was bad? Chances are, since the CEL came on, it is unrelated to the clutch.

We will have to wait for the code to make further educated guesses.

My guess is the Mass Air-flow Sensor failed and needs replacement.

Clutch pressure plate ?

I don't understand how a slipping clutch could trigger a CEL, but recently had a similar problem with my clutch.
Here's my clutch story...

When shifting hard from 1st to 2nd the clutch sometimes wouldn't catch properly and it would slip for a fraction of a second. It could hold the power under full boost though in all the other higher gears.
The local tech at the dealer concluded it was a sticky pressure plate and SA thought it could be covered by warranty.
When I took it in for repair they had back tracked and said when they get it apart if it looks as though it's been abused, then I'd be on the hook for all charges. This is according to the regional rep.
I pointed out how can you tell the difference between abuse and slip caused by a weak pressure plate ?
I declined the dealers offer and I am having an indi fit an uprated clutch.
The dealer said they would take a look at the old clutch and determine if any warranty compensation is merited - I doubt they'll come through.

Quite frankly after 3 brand new Porsches each with a major problem I'm beginning to loose faith in Porsche ('99 Boxster - new engine @ 6000 miles; '02 996 Cab - new tip g/box @ 12,000 miles; '03 TT - new engine @ 7500 miles).

They have a book with pictures that represent normal wear vs "abuse" what ever yours looks closest to is what they go with, I would assume leaning toward abuse and them not paying.
My tranny lost 2nd gear and 2+3 syncros. they told me it was abuse and I had to (and did) pay for a new tranny!
So then i make it all better by sticking to one of my favorite sayings, "todays problems are tomorrows upgrades!!!"
Then relax and enjoy the upgrade until you brake or wear something else out!
dont give up on the marque, it still is the best IMHO
