Chances of 997TT VTG Turbo tech. on a 996TT?
What are the chances that someone like EVOMS could figure out a way to put VGT Turbo technology on the 996TT, once it comes out? Is it premature to ask this question or is it completely impossible because of drastic differences in the ECU, etc? Most likely, I'm guessing EVO will just focus thier energy on the 997TT, but I was curious anyway. I'm afraid there will be no more improvements made to the 996TT once the new model is available to be tinkered with. Thoughts? Guesses?

If the technology is worthwhile, enterprising tuners will offer it to everything from 930s up. Remember, these have been around for awhile and no one was interested in them until now.....so lets see how the 997TT is treated.......but God is it ugly....

why do you say that?
maybe i'm missing something obvious, but it's just programming the ECU to account for the quicker spool-up. ????

993, shop, whatever. That's not the issue here. I understand the point that VGT has been around for a while and isn't a revolutionary technology. Let's just say, Porsche managed to "re-invent" the VGT to be worthwhile. I'm trying to imagine how much of that could be related to the turbo generators and how much to some proprietary ecu programing. If it's in the turbines, could they be slapped on to a 996? Again, I can see how it's too soon to tell. it's just fun to think about.

my guesses: yes, you can slap the VTG's on a 996 since it's the same engine as 997. theoretically, w/ programming, you'll get better spool & mid-range; however, will it be worth the $$$ to buy these from porsche?
if you want to go higher than 550-600hp, you'll have to revert back to our turbo selections now since no one makes a bigger VTG (that i'm aware of.)

Yea, you're right. It's exactly reverse what someone else said in one of the other threads about modding a 997TT. Now that I think of it, that's where I got the idea (or problem for that matter). So, I guess what I'm wondering, could someone take a 997tt turbo and "grow it" for both the 997 and 996 TT's. I'm thiking the new complexity of the VTG and the imense reprogramming of the ECU could be prohibitive. Nevertheless, I think you're saying "if someone builds it, they can be used". Right?

I don't see any reason you can't enlarge the compressor and clean up the turbine on the 997TT for more power. I don't have any idea how you can control the variable nozzle on the 997TT turbocharger with a 996TT ECU. The 997TT has other changes, such as continously variable intake valve timing, that would make it difficult to use a 997 ECU on a 996TT. Maybe someone can make an external black box controller that simply controls the turbine nozzle based on RPM or exhaust back pressure, independent of the ECU.
I wonder if the 997 turbine nozzles are 2 position or continously variable?
edit: I just remembered the the variable turbo vanes have to be periodically cycled through their complete range or motion to "sweep" off any carbon build up.

The main problem is how you control the VATN vs internal wastegates on the 996tt. The turbos have been around for years but the materials where not able to cope with the heat. Now they can.
I expect an aftermarket boost controller will do the trick. Problem is they are not made yet. Once they become available I expect we will see them on our cars. The comment about being easier on my 993tt stems from the less complicated electronics and how the ECU would react to the new boost curve.

ahhh, that was the "obvious thing" i was missing

They save that for the GT2
