Answer this question: Why I bought a Porsche 996 turbo.

Bought the Lambo as I think it is one of the coolest cars ever made. Started tracking it (God do I love the track). Started to modify/race prep the Lambo (big big dollars and trail blazing - no one else does this). Broke a spindle on the track and said a 20 year old car is not safe enough on the track. Wanted a faster, safer, less maintenance street/track car that was easy to mod. Need speed and loved the boost, TT or GT2 it is. Nothing is close in terms of streetable track reliability upgradability.

Was always a target for me as I built-up my company. Started into Porsche with a C2 but always knew the Turbo was coming.
Needed something I could enjoy practically as a daily driver. As I think we all agree, there's really not another car in this bracket that delivers the goods across the board as well as the Turbo. I don't feel there is anything to upgrade to at this point (though an addition would be nice).

Had always admired german cars...I've always thought Germans were so well trained technically with an emphasis on engineering and mathematics, and it showed in the products...
My wife and I went to test drive a Cayenne, and a savvy salesman let us take a Turbo out "for a spin"...
smart move on his part, and we ended up buying a Cayenne 8 weeks later anyway !
Then the whole Ruf experience was another thing of great enjoyment...the car feels bulletproof and as tight as the day I bought it

With my father's first 1976 911S (at 15), I was hooked - he ended up having 12 911's over the years and never let me drive any of them! (of course, as a stupid teenager, I did copy the keys, disconnect the speedo and drive them whenever he was gone - what a sinful pleasurable high that was! - the sound of the engine combined with the prospect of getting caught by Dad -ended up getting caught eventually though ) Dad liked the N/A cars, but the Turbo's were calling me from the first 1978 Intercooled car sighting in Laguna Beach near my high school - as I recall, he used to tell me "I've worked all of my life to drive this car"
Now (at 40) with my 996TT, Dad keeps asking me when he will be able to drive it..................................

why buy a porsche TT?
This is a great question buddy. Two thought pathways:
1. My dad, a Ferrari dreamer, and lame, because he can write a check for any production F-car out there without a sweat (this includes enzo), but isn't willing to pay for it. Don't even ask me why, parents are a trip. Anyway, always loved the f-cars from magnum pi onward. Still think sometimes about getting one and through the years, had lots of debates with my friends about how much better ferrari was. Never thought I'd ever get a porsche. Along came the 996 and I said these are great but too expensive. Remember when the 996TT came out and they were asking 10-20 over sticker for them...crazy I thought.
2. Late 2003 and funds are coming in at a decent clip, got the home and living in Santa Barbara wanted a ragtop. The m3 conv. was an easy option as was a 996 cab. Already have an 01 540i sport so was ready to look into Porsche. Well, I used to have a new mustang cobra that was pretty fast. Just blew one those the other day, didn't even have to try. Anyway, the cabs were nice but at the dealer I asked, "Whats the diff between the 996 and 996tt?" Answer: night and day. We drove the TT and that was the end of the convertable issue.
3. I can think of no other car under warranty with this kind of reliability, performance, daily drivability and looks. I love my car and got it for the mid 80s and the car feels every bit as tight as a new one. I am very happy with my purchace and am also very happy to be part of the 6 speed community.
Cheers

Hey buddy, how'd did you manage to get an NSX in 1986?
I had an 84 944 (Dads)
88 911 loved it
99 911 loved it more
happen to walk in to a local Porsche showroom and my dream car 996TT was sitting there. I had to have it and never looked back. Then I added the Cayenne TT!!

I had 02 Lexus SC430 when it first came out, drove it for 18 months. It was a great car but I got bored with it, sold the car to clear the deck for something else. I had driven a 01 TT and wanted one. I started looking around eBay, auto trader, etc. and came close couple of times.
I thought about a MBZ SL55 and came within $2K of a deal but didn't do it. Earlier that week, Porsche sales guy called to let me know he had a brochure for 40th anniversary 911. Next day, I went out to play golf , stopped by the dealer afterwards to pick up a brochure, had no intention of buying a car that day.
Next thing I know, I am writing a check for 03 911 TT.
The salesman says " come back any time for more brochures".
Talk about an impulse buy !
